Baseball concedes doubleheader to Berry College

ROME, Ga. – Bates College baseball conceded a doubleheader to Berry College, falling 8-3 in game one and 6-1 in game two, with both contests lasting seven innings at William R. Bowdoin Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The host Vikings (6-3) swept the three-game series with the Bobcats (0-4) after picking up a 13-10 victory over the visitors on Tuesday afternoon.

Next, Bates continues its Georgia trip at LaGrange College tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Game One Recap – Berry 8, Bates 3

Bates sophomore right-hander Samuel Warren (Norfolk, Va.) allowed just one unearned run on one hit in three innings as the starter, but Berry plated seven runs (one earned) off the Bobcat bullpen to take an 8-3 win in game one.

Junior left fielder Nate Pajka (Douglas, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Bobcats while senior Kevin Davis (North Andover, Mass.) and first-year Brendon Canavan (Carlisle, Mass.) each knocked in a run.

For Berry, starter Ben Jernigan earned the win, throwing 5.1 innings and giving up three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four.

Berry notched the game's first run in the bottom of the first and did not relinquish the lead. The Vikings brought in their first run on a sacrifice fly from Stephen Gaylor. After a scoreless second and third, the hosts added another run in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out single from Sam Pope.

The Vikings opened up the game with a six-run fifth to capture an 8-0 lead, registering all their runs with two outs. Pope knocked in his second run of the game on a single through the right side before Dusty Tyson brought in two runs with a single, and T.C. Boyd plated another two with a double.

Bates began a comeback in the next half inning, scoring three runs to pull within 8-3. After singles from junior Rockwell Jackson (Fort Worth, Texas) and senior Griff Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.), Davis brought in a run with a single of his own. With one out, Pajka posted an RBI single, and later in the frame Davis scored on a fielder's choice. 

Berry reliever Doug Heath retired the Bobcats in order in the top of the seventh.

Game Two Recap – Berry 6, Bates 1

Berry starter Ryan O'Connell threw five innings of one-run baseball as the home team followed its game one win with a 6-1 victory in game two.

Bates sophomore right-hander Chris Ward (Pasadena, Calif.) allowed three runs, all earned, on five hits over three innings as the starter in the loss.

For the visitors, senior Steve Burke (Bedford, N.H.) and sophomore Berto Diaz (Carson, Calif.) each went 2-for-3 at the plate while junior Alex Parker (Lewiston, Maine) charted the team's only RBI.

The Vikings struck in the bottom of the first with a single up the middle from Alex McGill and a double from Heath into center field, seizing a 2-0 lead.

After Parker singled in a run in the top of the second, Berry tacked on another run in the bottom half of the frame as Tyson laced an RBI double to left center, giving the Vikings a 3-1 edge.

Berry added one run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings with McGill and Sam Joyce providing RBIs in the fifth and sixth innings respectively.
