CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The No. 16 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team scored a stirring 7-2 victory over No. 13 Navy on Saturday in the Hoehn Cup (B Division) consolation bracket semifinals.
The win avenges Bates' 5-4 loss to the Midshipmen on Jan. 25 at the Yale Round Robin, and puts Bates in position to finish 13th in the final CSA national standings.
In the other consolation semifinal, No. 15 Williams upset No. 14 Drexel 6-3, setting up the third match this season between the Bobcats and their rival Ephs. Bates defeated Williams 6-3 at home on Jan. 11, but Williams avenged that with a 5-4 win in the NESCAC Championship semifinals on Feb. 1 at Hamilton.
Senior captain
Kristian Muldoon (Hamilton, Bermuda) set the tone of the day by reeling off three straight sets for a 3-1 win over Mitchell Bottini at the No. 3 position, in a rematch of Bottini's 3-1 win over Muldoon in January.
Another key for Bates was first-year
Darrius Campbell (St. Stephen, S.C.), who lost at the No. 7 position against Navy in January. But on Saturday, at the No. 4 position, Campbell came back from a 2-0 deficit to stun Navy's Colin Barry by a 3-2 score (4-11, 10-12, 11-5, 11-6, 11-6).
Sophomore
Ahmed Abdel Khalek (Cairo, Egypt) extended his perfect record to 16-0 with a 3-0 win over James Kacergis at No. 1, and first-year
Ahmed Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt) outlasted Andrew McGuinness for a 3-2 win at No. 2.Â
Bates (12-7) completed a sweep of the top seven positions, with junior
Nabil Saleem (Alpharetta, Ga.) routing Hunter Beck 3-0 at No. 5, sophomore
Caran Arora (Mumbai, India) winning 3-2 at No. 6 and junior
Andy Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) prevailing 3-1 at No. 7.
