HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Bates volleyball team concluded the 2014 season on Saturday with a narrow 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-21) loss at Trinity College's Oosting Gymnasium.
The Bantams won their second straight match to improve to 13-10 overall and 4-6 in NESCAC play, while the Bobcats ended the year with a 9-16 overall record and an 0-10 mark in conference matches. Trinity will enter the upcoming NESCAC Championship Tournament as the No. 8 seed and will travel to square off with top-seeded Tufts in the opening round.
Each set was tightly contested, with neither team leading by more than five at any point. Trinity had 36 kills, 30 digs and seven aces, while the Bobcats had 30 kills, 51 digs and six aces.
Kate Giddens paced the Trinity attack with a match-high 15 kills and a pair of aces. Hunter Drews added nine kills and Katie Stueber registered five kills. The setting duo of Gina Buzzelli and Randi Whitham combined for 32 assists. Buzzelli recorded a match-best 18 and Whitham added 14 of her own.
Bates was led by sophomore outside hitter Chandler McGrath (Seal Beach, Calif.), who recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Gabby O'Leary (Wynnewood, Pa.) and junior outside hitter Brynn Wendel (Boxford, Mass.) each added five kills apiece to aid the offensive cause. Senior setter Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) added 10 assists in her final match for the Bobcats.
On defense, Bates junior specialist Laryssa Schepel (Flemington, N.J.) had a match-leading 12 digs and sophomore middle blocker Nicole Peraica (East Northport, N.Y.) added four blocks. For the Bantams, Giddens had eight digs and Stueber had two blocks.
