Shapiro, Walther star in Senior Night victory over Maine Maritime

Box Score

LEWISTON, Maine -- Captains Miranda Shapiro and Tess Walther earned a victory in their final home match for the Bates volleyball team on Wednesday night, recording 18 and 17 assists, respectively, in a 3-0 (28-26, 25-15, 25-23) decision over Maine Maritime Academy.

Bates (9-13) snapped a seven-match skid with the win, while Maine Maritime dropped to 11-13.

Shapiro (New York, N.Y.) recorded a double-double, adding 11 digs for the night, one shy of first-year Augy Silver's (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) match-high 12. Sophomore Nicole Peraica (East Northport, N.Y.) led Bates with nine kills and junior Brynn Wendel (Boxford, Mass.) added seven, to go with two blocks apiece for both players. Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) had four of Bates' 10 service aces on the night.

The Mariners' Gillian O'Neal finished the night just shy of a double-double with 10 digs, nine kills and three service aces. Jess Menges had a team-high 11 digs, while Sydney Robertson picked up six kills, five service aces, two block solos and two digs. Betsy Trenckmann added 18 assists and nine digs.

The first set of the night was the most competitive, with neither team leading by more than three at any point. A Bates attack error put MMA a point away from the win, leading 25-24, but a service error tied the set back up. Tied at 26-26, Bates recieved a kill by Wendel, assisted by Shapiro. Walther then served and set up the set-clinching kill by Peraica.

Bates jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the second set and held MMA at bay the rest of the way to take a 2-0 lead. A balanced attack saw five Bates players with two or more kills in the set, led by sophomore Chandler McGrath's (Seal Beach, Calif.) three, with Shapiro doling eight assists. MMA turned to O'Neal for 15 of 33 attack attempts in the set, but with only three kills to show for them.

Silver served six straight times early in the third set as Bates built a 13-8 lead, getting two kills by first-year Lisa Slivken (New York, N.Y.) in a 6-0 run. The Mariners caught up at 18-18 with a 7-1 spurt, with aces by Robertson and Trenckmann as well as kills by Leah Libby and Coronado Hickman. Bates responded with four straight points, with two kills by Peraica, one by Slivken and an ace by Walther. Three straight attack errors by the Bobcats allowed the Mariners to tie the set again at 22-22. A Bates service error made it 23-23, but a kill by Peraica followed by a Mary Deneen (Windsor, Conn.) kill, but assisted by Walther, iced the win.

Bates returns to NESCAC play on Friday, playing at Colby at 7pm.
