Men's soccer's streak ends with 2-1 overtime loss at Middlebury

Box Score

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Middlebury's Greg Conrad scored 2:28 into the first overtime Saturday, lifting the Panthers to a 2-1 victory over the Bates men's soccer team on Saturday, ending the Bobcats' three-game winning streak.

The Bobcats (4-8-1, 2-6) evened the score at 1-1 in the 70th minute on a goal by first-year Sal Sprofera (Medfield, Mass.), breaking Middlebury's 51-minute 1-0 lead.

Bates hosts Williams next Saturday at 2pm, during Homecoming Weekend.

Middlebury (7-2-3, 4-2-3) got on the scoreboard first in the 18th minute. Philip Skayne sent a cross from outside the box on the right side of the field all the way to the left side. The cross found the feet of Adam Glaser, who made a quick touch and laced a hard shot to the right side of the goal at 17:33. The score was Glaser's team-leading seventh of the fall.

The Panthers nearly doubled their lead in the 30th minute. Following a foul, Noah Goss-Woliner took the resulting free kick from 35 yards away on the right side. His free kick skidded on the wet turf, nearly going over the goal line, but Deklan Robinson saved it from going out of bounds. Robinson sent a pass back out to Conrad, who blasted a shot from 18 yards out that sailed to the right.

The Bobcats' best scoring chance in the opening half came in the 43rd minute. Sprofera gathered a loose ball in the middle of the pitch just outside the penalty area, and blasted a shot toward the Panther goal. Greg Sydor made a diving attempt to his right, but Sprofera's shot just missed wide left.

In the second half, Bates looked to even the match in the 47th minute. Sophomore Peabo Knoth (Portland, Maine) worked his way around his defender and dribbled down the left side. He sent a cross into the six-yard box, but first-year Nate Merchant (Los Angeles, Calif.) wasn't able to control the slick, bouncing ball and misfired his shot attempt.

Over the next 20 minutes, the two teams didn't have many scoring opportunities. But at 69:37, Bates knotted the score at 1-1. Knoth dribbled to the right end line, and sent a pass back out to Sprofera. The rookie took a shot from about eight yards out that glanced off a Middlebury defender and into the back of the net. It was Sprofera's first goal this season, and Knoth's team-best fourth assist.

Bates looked to take the lead in the 77th minute. Knoth took a hard shot from six yards out on the left side, but Sydor made a diving save to his right, and kept the match tied at 1-1.

The Panthers recorded the game-winning tally just 2:28 into the first overtime period. Skayne sent a corner kick into the penalty area. The wet ball found the feet of Robinson, who sent a lofting shot toward the goal. The shot was redirected off Kirk Horton's chest, and also bounced off Conrad's chest into the back of the net for the game-winner. The goal is Conrad's fifth of the season.

Middlebury held a 14-7 advantage in shots for the match, possessing an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

With the win, the Panthers retain the Hedley Reynolds Cup. Awarded annually, the cup is named after Thomas Hedley Reynolds, who served in administrative roles at both institutions. He began his tenure as the Dean of Men at Middlebury in 1957, and became the Dean of the College seven years later. He then served as the president of Bates from 1967 through 1989.

Bates junior Sam Polito (Far Hills, N.J.) made three saves in net for Bates.
