LEWISTON, Maine -- Babson College won for the 10th time in 12 matches this season as the Bates women's tennis team fell 7-2 in its only dual match of the fall on Friday at Wallach Tennis Center.
The Beavers (10-2), who are off to their best start since 2008, seized a 3-0 lead in doubles play, winning 8-2 at both second and third doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Babson's Alex Freeman and Yagmur Akgul prevailed 8-5 over Bates' top duo, senior captain Elena Mandzhukova (Lisbon, Portugal) and sophomore Elizabeth Erbafina (Sudbury, Mass.).
Bates scored the first two points in singles play, with sophomore Kate Rosenthal (Pittsburgh, Pa.) defeating Babson's Tori Paolino 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles, while sophomore Olivia Voccola (Falmouth, Maine) won by a 6-2, 6-3 score over Alexis Ferraro at No. 5. Babson won the final four points in singles, however, including a 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) win by Jenny Quenard at No. 3 singles over Bates rookie Maisie Silverman (Brunswick, Maine).
Bates (0-1) finishes its abbreviated fall season Oct. 17-19 at the Bowdoin Invitational.
