LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College men's squash beat Williams College, 6-3, for the first time since Jan. 12, 2008 and also defeated Connecticut College, 8-1, on Saturday at the Bates Squash Center.
The matchup between the 12th-ranked Bobcats (4-1) and the 18th-ranked Ephs (4-9) marked the first time that both the men's and women's teams for Bates ranked higher than Williams in the CSA national rankings. The Bates women are No. 10 while the Williams women rank No. 15.
Sophomore Ahmed Abdel Khalek (Cairo, Egypt) and first-year Ahmed Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt) each won in straight sets against the Ephs on court Nos. 1 and 2 respectively, holding serve at the top of the ladder.
The Bobcats also emerged victorious on courts 4-7 as junior Andy Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.), junior Nabil Saleem (Alpharetta, Ga.), first-year Darrius Campbell (St. Stephen, S.C.), and sophomore Caran Arora (Mumbai, India) won in order to help upend the Ephs. Cannon and Saleem each won their matches in five sets.
All the same Bobcats picked up wins earlier in the day against the 24th-ranked Camels (4-4) as did senior Kristian Muldoon (Paget, Bermuda) on court No. 3 and first-year Nima Olumi (Newton, Mass.) at the No. 8 position.
Next, Bates hosts Northeastern tomorrow at noon.
