Box Score 2 BRUNSWICK, Maine – Bates College split two matches at the Mid-Coast Classic at Bowdoin College defeating the University of New Brunswick St. John, 3-2, before falling to Brandeis University, 3-2, at Morrell Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Bobcats (7-9) beat the Seawolves in an exhibition contest taking sets three (25-15), four (25-5), and five (15-7) after dropping games one (25-18) and two (25-23). Against the Judges (7-10), Bates won sets one (25-14) and four (26-24) with Brandeis emerging victorious in games two (25-19), three (25-12), and five (15-6).
In the team's win over New Brunswick St. John, sophomore Brynn Wendel (Boxford, Mass.) notched a career and team-high 14 kills. Sophomores Abby Leberman (Concord, N.H.) and Mary Deneen (Windsor, Conn.) as well as first-years Aubyn Link (Houston, Texas) and Nicole Peraica (East Northport, N.Y.) each landed eight kills while fellow first year Chandler McGrath (Seal Beach, Calif.) tallied seven kills, three block solos, and two block assists.
Junior captains Miranda Shapiro (New York, N.Y.) and Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) dished out 31 and 21 assists respectively. Shapiro eclipsed the 30-assist mark for the first time this year, and Walther broke the 20-assist barrier for the third time this season.
Defensively, sophomore Laryssa Schepel (Flemington, N.J.) recorded 23 digs, and classmate Nicole Cueli (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) registered 12 digs. Schepel made 20 or more digs in a match for the fifth time this year in 10 matches played.
In the match against Brandeis, Liz Hood paced the Judges with 18 kills and gained her 1000th career kill during the second set. For the Bobcats, McGrath totaled 10 kills, five block assists, two block solos, and four aces while Schepel had 25 digs, and Shapiro had 17 assists.
Next, Bates plays at the University of New England on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
