Volleyball wins one of two on second day at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Bates College volleyball beat Simmons 3-2 after falling to Wellesley 3-0 at the second and final day of the MIT Invitational at the duPont Athletic Center on Saturday.

In the team's finale, the Bobcats (6-3) beat the Sharks (0-12) taking the second and third sets – 25-19, 25-19 – before capturing the decisive frame, 15-9. Simmons won set one in extra points, 26-24, and the fourth game, 25-10. In their first match of the day the Bobcats fell to the Blue (8-1) in straight sets, 25-20, 25-15, 25-23.

Sophomore Nicole Cueli (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) led the Bobcats with a career-high 22 digs in the team's win over Simmons while first-year Hannah Tardie (Orange, Calif.) chipped in defensively with 14 digs.

Junior setter Miranda Shapiro (New York, N.Y.) registered her second double-double of the tournament with 25 assists and 17 digs to go with five aces while classmate Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) dished out 21 assists. Offensively, Chandler McGrath (Seal Beach, Calif.) paced Bates with 12 kills on 24 swings.

Against Wellesley, Cueli led the team with 12 digs while co-captains Walther and Shapiro recorded 16 and 10 assists respectively. McGrath posted a team-high nine kills on 17 attempts for a .529 hitting percentage while also chipping in two block solos.

Bates finished 2-2 at the tournament after defeating Endicott 3-2 and dropping a 3-0 decision to MIT on Friday.

Next, Bates begins NESCAC play at Williams on Friday at 8 p.m.
