BANGOR, Maine -- First-year Gabby O'Leary and sophomore Mary Deneen combined for 19 kills and only one attack error, pacing the Bates volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-8, 25-17) non-conference win at Husson University on Wednesday night.
The victory raises the Bobcats to 4-1, while the host Eagles dropped to 3-7 with their second loss to Bates in the young season.
O'Leary (Wynnewood, Pa.) tallied a season-high 10 kills without an attack error on 26 attempts, for a healthy .385 attack percentage. She added a team-high two blocks. Deneen (Windsor, Conn.) was even more effective offensively, with nine kills and one error in 19 attempts (.421).
First-years Nicole Peraica (East Northport, N.Y.) and Chandler McGrath (Seal Beach, Calif.) added five and four kills, respectively.
Splitting setting duties for the Bobcats, junior Miranda Shapiro (New York, N.Y.) and Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) collected 19 and 12 assists, respectively. Sophomore Nicole Cueli (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) led the back row with 12 digs, while first-year Hannah Tardie (Orange, Calif.) contributed eight.
Bates dominated the first two sets, hitting at a .290 percentage in the first set and .348 in the second, with no attack errors in the middle frame.
Emma Plouffe posted four kills to pace the Eagles' attack. Shannon Tallan had three blocks, while Kara Graham and Lindsay Chapman came up with 11 and 10 digs apiece.
Bates travels to Cambridge, Mass., for the MIT Invitational this weekend. The Bobcats take on Endicott on Friday at 6pm, followed by a match against the host Engineers at 8pm. On Saturday, Bates faces Wellesley at 12pm and Simmons at 4pm.
