LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates men's squash team opened the 2013-14 season with a 9-0 loss to visiting Trinity College, the defending national and NESCAC champions.
The top-ranked Bantams (1-0), national champions in 14 of the last 15 seasons, swept all but two individual matches for the win.Â
No. 12-ranked Bates (0-1) was without the services of its No. 1 player, sophomore Ahmed Abdel Khalek (Cairo, Egypt), a national semifinalist last season, who was out with an injury. Taking over the top spot in Bates' lineup was first-year Ahmed Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt), who went toe-to-toe with the top Bantam, Karan Malik, over the first two sets before accepting a 3-1 loss (9-11, 14-12, 11-2, 11-6).
First-year Darrius Campbell (St. Stephen, S.C.) gained Bates' other set win, in a 3-1 (11-2, 11-6, 9-11, 11-4) loss to Moustafa Hamada at the No. 7 spot. At No. 4, sophomore Nabil Saleem (Alpharetta, Ga.) pushed Vrishab Kotian to a 15-13 outcome in the third and final set.
Bates returns to action on Dec. 6 with a 5pm match at NESCAC rival Bowdoin.
