LEWISTON, Maine -- Sixteen players scored for the Bates College men's basketball team, led by Mike Boornazian's 17, in the Bobcats' season opener on Friday night, a 107-46 win over UMaine-Augusta in the first game of the Bates Tipoff Classic at Alumni Gymnasium.
Highlighted by two of the most spectacular dunks the gym has seen in years, Bates raced out to leads of 14-0, 30-2 and 40-4 on the way to a 62-15 halftime score in the rout.
Sophomore Josh Britten (Yarmouth, Maine) scored a career-high 11 points, including 3-of-5 three-point shooting, while junior Graham Safford (Hampden, Maine) and first-year Max Eaton (St. Petersburg, Fla.) added 10 points apiece, with Eaton shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field.
Brandon Rogers led the Moose with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jesse Smith added 10 points.
The tournament continues tomorrow with UMaine-Augusta (0-5) facing UMaine-Farmington (0-0) at 2pm. Bates and UMF will meet on Sunday at 2pm to conclude the tourney.
The game marks Bates' first time over the 100-point mark since netting 100 on Dec. 8, 2002, against Mount Ida.
The Bobcats also held the Moose to 24.6 percent shooting from the field, including 17.6% from behind the 3-point line, and forced 27 turnovers while committing nine.
Boornazian (Portland, Conn.) led off the scoring with a 3-pointer from the wing, set up by senior Luke Matarazzo (Shelton, Conn.), and Safford made it 6-0 with a three of his own, assisted by 6-foot-7 first-year forward Marcus Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.).
Following a Boornazian layup, Delpeche made it 10-0 while giving the crowd of over 400 in the gym a taste of the above-the-rim action that may be on the menu this season for Bates. Off a missed three by Boornazian, Delpeche skied for the rebound and a one-handed, rim-rattling flush. Marcus Delpeche finished the game with eight points and a team-high eight rebounds, while his 6-8 twin brother Malcolm Delpeche added four points and three boards off the bench.
Marcus Delpeche scored a pair of free throws to increase the lead to 14-0 before the Moose got on the scoreboard with 16:12 left in the half, a layup by Smith.
Bates remained in showtime mode, increasing the lead to 40-4 on a three by Matarazzo with 7:46 to go in the half. Then with 3:25 to go, junior Billy Selmon (Atlanta, Ga.) poked the ball away from UMA's Zjateek Conyers over to senior Derek Murphy (Lowell, Mass.). Murphy tossed a lead pass ahead of Selmon, and Selmon was able to measure his steps, take off from about 12 feet away from the rim and hang in the air for a majestic dunk, the first of his college career. The bucket itself was fairly inconsequential, putting Bates ahead 55-12, but Selmon's breathtaking slam drew a huge cheer from the home crowd.
A three from the corner by Eaton made it 62-14 before the end of the half.
Bates sophomore forward Mike Newton (Chapel Hill, N.C.) had a productive all-around game, with a game- and career-high six steals as well as four assists and seven points in 12 minutes. Murphy handed out a game-best five assists. Boornazian and senior Sean Cunningham (Amherst, Mass.) grabbed seven and six rebounds, respectively, helping Bates to a 58-45 advantage on the glass.
