Volleyball takes first set but falls at Hamilton, 3-1

CLINTON, N.Y. – Bates College volleyball won the first set but dropped the next three in a 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 26-24, 25-15) loss to Hamilton College on Friday night at Scott Field House.

The Bobcats (11-16, 2-7 NESCAC) used a second half surge to take set one, but the Continentals (5-16, 1-9) reversed the momentum in set two and captured set three in extra points on the way to their first NESCAC victory of the season.

Bates remains in a three-way tie for eighth place in the NESCAC with Colby and Wesleyan with one regular season match remaining for each team.

For the hosts, Jessica Weston, Ivanka Temnycky, and Emma Lonadier each notched double-digit kills with 12, 11, and 10 kills respectively. Sarah Pfund led all players with 38 assists in addition to 13 digs while three other Hamilton players tallied double figure digs – Anna Brown (25), Emma Lonadier (18), and Erin Casey (10).

First-year Gabby O'Leary (Wynnewood, Pa.) posted a team-high eight kills on .240 hitting for the Bobcats. Sophomore Mary Deneen (Windsor, Conn.) and first-year Nicole Peraica (East Northport, N.Y.) tallied six kills apiece while first-year Chandler McGrath (Seal Beach, Calif.) recorded six block assists and five kills.

Defensively for the visitors, sophomore Laryssa Schepel (Flemington, N.J.) tied for the match high with 25 digs.

Junior setter and co-captain Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) recorded her fifth double-double on the season with 17 assists to go with 15 digs, and fellow captain Miranda Shapiro (New York, N.Y.) handed out 12 assists.

Next, Bates plays at Middlebury tomorrow at 3 p.m.
