Box Score 2 CASTINE, Maine – Bates College volleyball won the second match 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-20) after dropping the first match 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 15-9) in a doubleheader at Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday night in Smith Gymnasium.
The Bobcats (9-13) took the final match of the night in straight sets after the Mariners (12-8) captured sets two, three, and five to win the evening's opening match.
In the visitors' win, first-year Nicole Peraica (East Northport, N.Y.) led all players with 10 kills on 15 swings and two errors for a .533 hitting percentage. Classmate Chandler McGrath (Seal Beach, Calif.) followed closely with eight kills on 18 total attempts hitting .389 in the match.
Junior co-captain and setter Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) recorded a match-high 15 assists alongside six digs while sophomores Nicole Cueli (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Abby Leberman (Concord, N.H.) each notched nine digs.
In a marathon match to open the night, the Mariners emerged victorious behind a .264 hitting percentage after over two hours of competition. Sydney Robertson tallied a match-high 18 kills on .441 hitting to go with six block assists and two block solos. Melissa Lail backed her up with 12 kills.
Also for the hosts, Samantha Tumolo dished out a match-high 37 assists, and Gillian O'Neal made a match-best 21 digs.
Defensively for the Bobcats, Cueli, first-year Aubyn Link (Houston, Texas), and rookie Gabby O'Leary (Wynnewood, Pa.) registered 19, 17, and 11 digs respectively.
Walther posted 17 assists to go with eight digs while fellow junior co-captain Miranda Shapiro (New York, N.Y.) totaled 11 assists and nine digs. Peraica paced the visitors with nine kills in the match on .333 hitting.
Next, Bates returns to NESCAC play with home matches against Trinity (Friday, 8 p.m.) and Wesleyan (Saturday, 2 p.m.).
