Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine – Bates College volleyball lost in straight sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-19) to the University of New England inside Harold Alfond Forum on Tuesday night.
The Nor'easters (8-5) hit .452 in the match while the Bobcats (7-10) hit .184. Angie Brunette led UNE with 12 kills on 19 swings hitting .526 while Leah Janelle landed 11 kills on .450 hitting.
Sophomore Brynn Wendel (Boxford, Mass.) paced the Bobcats with seven kills while classmate Abby Leberman (Concord, N.H.) and first-year Nicole Peraica (East Northport, N.Y.) each posted five kills.
Junior captain Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) recorded a team-high 17 assists. Classmate and fellow captain Miranda Shapiro (New York, N.Y.) registered 10 assists.
For UNE, Maria Kuehl led all players with 30 assists, and Kirsta Adie notched a match-high 10 digs.
After a Walther ace opened set one, the Nor'easters responded with a 7-0 run to take an early 7-1 lead. The Bobcats later used a 5-1 streak to pull within 9-7 with two kills from Aubyn Link and one from Mary Deneen during that stretch. Bates remained within three at 13-10 after consecutive kills from Wendel, but UNE capitalized on its second 7-0 run of the set to capture a 20-10 edge it would not look back from.
The hosts built off their set one momentum in the second set staking leads of 5-0 and 15-5 despite two kills from Wendel. UNE held a lead as large as 20-8 in the second stanza.
The Nor'easters continued to control play in set three earning a quick 9-2 edge. The Bobcats battled back with a 5-1 run – which included kills from Leberman and Peraica – to pull within 10-7. Trailing 18-12, the Bobcats used a 4-1 spurt to cut the UNE lead to 19-16 with Peraica contributing a kill and a block assist during the streak, but the visitors could get no closer the remainder of the set.
