LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 18 Bates men's squash team continues to dominate late in the season, extending their win streak to six games through Saturday night's win against Drexel. Bates completed the perfect sweep having only lost four individual games in the all four match wins on the day.
The men coasted by No. 33 MIT Saturday morning, which proved to set the tone for the rest of the day. The Bobcats won ladder spots one through eight in perfect 3-0 form. First-year Gardiner Nardini (New York, N.Y.) extended his winning match-up into an exciting four games. Nardini dropped the first game 10-12, before going 3-0 in the second, third, and fourth games (11-9,11-8,11-5) to take the win.
The men continued their streak with a 7-2 victory over No. 17 George Washington in an early afternoon match. The Bobcats started out with what looked to be a tough match. Senior Bobby Burns (Greenwich, Conn.) lost to junior Islam El-Fiky in straight games. Burns was followed by sophomore Kristian Muldoon (Paget, Bermuda) in the No. 2 spot, who fought hard in the third game to win the tiebreaker (14-12) and extend the match. Muldoon met his match in the fourth game (11-4), giving the Colonials the victory. The remainder of the Bobcat ladder provided all the necessary ammunition needed to receive the overall win. Junior Walter Cabot (Dover, Mass.) lost his first game (10-12), but went on to win games two, three, and four to slide away with the Bobcat win.
No. 35 Boston College was nearly swept by the Bobcats in the early evening. Bates took matchups one through eight easily with perfect 3-0 sweeps. At No. 8, junior James Mulholland (Vero Beach, Fla.) extended his individual match to four games before recording the win (8-11,11-5,11-6,11-9). To finish the lineup, first-year Julian Hackney (Bronx, N.Y.) edged Boston College junior Danny Gleason in a five-set match (12-10,9-11,11-3,7-11,11-6) in the No. 9 slot.
Bates finished the day as strong as they began late Saturday evening, defeating No. 29 Drexel 8-1. Highlighting the match were strong, marathon performances by junior David Born (Westbrook, Maine) and sophomore Rodney Galvao (Boston, Mass.), each battling to the full five game match for Bobcat wins.
Bates improves to 10-11 on the season following a tremendous day of squash. The men next travel to NESCAC host Trinity as they make a push in the conference tournament on Feb. 3.
