PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Bates College men's squash team defeated Navy 7-2 on Friday morning in the opening round of play in the Hoehn Cup (B Division) at the College Squash Association Team Nationals at Princeton University.
The Bobcats (15-7), seeded No. 12 in the tournament, showed excellent depth in defeating the 13th-seeded Midshipmen (25-7) in straight games at five positions: sophomore Matt Marchisotto (New York, N.Y.) at No. 4, sophomore Nick Echeverria (Washington, D.C.) at No. 5, first-year Bobby Burns (Greenwich, Conn.) at No. 6, senior Marc Taggart (Skippack, Pa.) at No. 8 and senior Charlie Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) at No. 9. Also winning for the Bobcats were sophomore Will Katz (Bronxville, N.Y.) at No. 2 and senior Chip Russell (West Hartford, Conn.) at No. 7.
Bates, which is seeking its second consecutive Hoehn Cup, advances to play No. 9 seed University of Western Ontario in the next round of the bracket on Saturday at noon.
