BANGOR, Maine -- Propelled by a season-high 25 points from senior Val Beckwith, the Bates College women's basketball team rolled past Husson University 79-64 on Tuesday night at Newman Gym.
Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) also grabbed 7 rebounds to lead the Bobcats, who raised their record to 3-1 with the non-conference win. She also passed Priscilla Wilde '77 and Jolene Thurston '00 on Bates' all-time scoring list, moving into 11th place with 1,091 career points.
Sophomore Maggie DePoy (Chicago, Ill.) scored a career-high 14 points, hitting all six of her free throws and both of her three-point shots en route to a 3-4 game from the field. First-year Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) dished out a career-high 9 assists to go with 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Sophomore Christine McCall (Lowell, Mass.) contributed 6 rebounds and 3 blocked shots, and junior Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) chipped in with 9 points.
The host Eagles (1-3) received 25 points, 14 rebounds and 3 steals from Shelby Bradford, while Bethany Sevey finished with 12 points.
Bates rode a 13-4 run late in the first half to take control. A steal and layup by Yanofsky with 3:16 to go in the half pushed the Bobcats' lead to 34-21. Husson closed the half on a 10-4 run to close the lead to 38-33 at intermission, but Bates shot 52.4 percent from the field in the second half to reestablish control. bates opened the second stanza on a 15-7 run, capped by a DePoy 3-pointer, pushing the lead to 55-40 with 13:19 to play.
Bates will play host to Wentworth Institute on Thursday at 6 p.m., then UMaine-Farmington on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a pair of home non-conference games.
