NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Bates College volleyball team won a pair of matches Saturday at Colby-Sawyer College, first defeating the host Chargers 3-0, with scores of 25-20, 25-13, and 25-21, and later earning a 3-1 victory over Plattsburgh State with scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-27, and 25-13.
The Bobcats raised their record this season to 14-15, their highest victory total since 2004. They finish the regular season with a trio of matches against NESCAC opponents Hamilton, Middlebury and Williams in a NESCAC weekend at Colby. Bates is trying to earn a berth in the eight-team field of the NESCAC Championship.
The Bobcats defeated the Colby-Sawyer Chargers, 3-0 in the first match of the day. Bates junior Avery Masters (Mill Valley, Calif.) led all players with 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .800. Junior Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) had a solid match for the Bobcats, registering four kills and a match-high 10 digs. Freshman setter Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.) ran an efficient offense for Bates, tallying 33 assists, six digs and two kills. Leading the attack for Colby-Sawyer was sophomore Michelle Doody (Franklin, Mass.) with nine kills. Senior Kristen Romanko (Mansfield, Mass.) and junior Genny Moore (Centerville, Mass.) each recorded five kills.
The Bobcats earned their second win of the afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Plattsburgh State. Leberman had a tremendous match with eight digs and a match-high 16 kills. Senior Beth Billington (St. Paul, Minn.) also played well for the Bobcats, recording nine kills and six total blocks. Junior Elise Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had eight kills and six digs in just two sets for Bates. Leading the way for the Cardinals was senior Keiko Watanabe (Hiroshima, Japan) who registered 10 kills. Junior Susan Bodkin filled the stat sheet for Plattsburgh with six kills, 15 assists and 13 digs. Freshman Andrea Kalter also played well for the Cardinals with six kills, seven assists and 10 digs.
