Abby Childs '09 (13) scored her team-high sixth and seventh goals of the season, including her first game-winner.

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College field hockey team got back on track Sunday, picking up a big win against NESCAC opponent Trinity College, 3-2. Both teams came off tough games on Saturday, with Bates losing a close one to Connecticut College 3-2, and Trinity defeating Colby 4-3 in overtime for their fourth straight win.

Bates junior forward Abby Childs (Philadelphia, Penn.) continued her stellar play on the front line, scoring two goals, including the game-winner in the Bobcats win Sunday. Childs, the current NESCAC Player of the Week, leads the Bobcats with seven goals this season.

Bates wasted no time getting on the board when Childs scored her first goal less than two minutes into the game. Childs was playing right up on Trinity's sophomore goalkeeper Jillian Fraker's (Nantucket, Mass.) pads and tipped a hard hit ball from junior midfielder Heidi Judkins (Farmington, Maine) into the net to put Bates up 1-0. However, the Bates attack seemed to slow down after the initial goal, and Trinity meanwhile increased their pressure. Trinity had 20 first half shots to Bates' seven, but the half ended with a score of 1-1. Trinity's goal came with 18 minutes left in the half on a shot from freshman forward Christina Bradley (Wellesley, Mass.).

In the first half, Bates seemed to be getting caught behind the Trinity defense, making it especially hard to generate any consistent pressure. However, over the last five minutes of the first half and carrying over into the second half, Bates made some adjustments and began to take control of the game.

The second half scoring mirrored the first half, with Bates scoring less than four minutes into the half off of a penalty corner. The ball was a bit off line as it sailed to the top of the circle, but senior midfielder Caitlin Tamposi (Temple, N.H.) and sophomore back Samantha Rothkopf (Chicago, Ill.) improvised and Tamposi managed to pass the ball quickly to the left to a wide-open Heidi Judkins (Farmington, Maine). Judkins shot the ball on net and snuck it into the far post to put the Bobcats on top 2-1. Trinity would tie the game up, just as they did in the first half, with just under 20 minutes left in the game on a goal from senior forward Marisa Shutte (Allentown, Penn.).

With the time winding down, and a score locked at 2-2, Bates first-year goaltender Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) made a spectacular diving stick save on a Trinity breakaway. The Trinity player picked up the rebound and put it over a sprawled-out McEnroe, but not before the ball hit her leg on the rebound and the goal was waved off.

Bates seemed to be sparked by their second chance and took advantage of it, playing hard and pressuring in Trinity's defensive end. With just under a minute to play, junior forward Rachel Greenwood (Williamstown, Mass.) took the ball up the center of the field and passed it to junior forward Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) on the right, who then hit it into the circle, finding Childs for the game-winning goal with 18.7 seconds remaining.

McEnroe made 10 saves to pick up the win for Bates, while Fraker made 5 saves in a losing effort for the Bantams. Trinity outshot Bates 32-24 and had double Bates' number of penalty corners, 8-4.

Bates looks to continue their winning streak against NESCAC opponent Tufts University at noon on Saturday at Campus Avenue Field. Trinity also plays next Saturday at noon, home against Williams College.
