NEW LONDON, Conn. — Freshman Abby Hine (Madison, Conn.) tallied her second score of the afternoon with just 4:36 remaining, propelling Connecticut College (2-3, 1-2) to a 3-2 victory against Bates College (3-2-1, 1-2) in NESCAC field hockey action played at Silfen Field Saturday.

The Camels got on the board just 4:21 into regulation. Junior forward Jenny Roe (Bethesda, Md.) played a ball across the cage and Hine tucked it in the left post-side of the goal for the score. Connecticut would go up 2-0 with 18:33 remaining in the half when senior midfielder Linnea Camerota (Waterford, Conn.) played a ball in from the left side of the circle, where senior forward Jill Mauer (Millbrook, N.Y.) redirected it for the score. Bates struggled on both sides of the field, and had difficulty keeping possession and generating any attack in the first half.

Bobcats head coach Wynn Hohlt was disappointed with her team's first half performance. “There was no energy in the first half,” she said. “We were not playing strong and we put ourselves in a two-goal hole."

At halftime Bates seemed to re-energize and came out ready to compete. With 18:39 to play, Bates closed the gap with a beautiful reverse stick goal from senior Erin Chandler (Thornton, Pa.). The Bobcats were pressuring in the Camels circle when Chandler intercepted a hard pass from first year midfielder Stephanie Cabot (Dover, Mass.) with her back to the goalie, pulled it to the right and flicked it into the net around the Camels sophomore goaltender Jamie Sheahan (South Burlington, Vt.). Eight minutes later Bates tied the game at 2-2, when junior forward Abby Childs (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored off an assist from fellow junior forward Rachel Greenwood (Williamstown, Mass.).

Connecticut head coach Debbie Lavigne called a timeout after Bates' goal. The next five minutes were all Connecticut. The Camels came out with an increased level of intensity and determination, and for the next five minutes they pressured in Bates' defensive end. With just under five minutes to go in the game, the Camels would go ahead for good on Hine's second goal of the game. Connecticut's sophomore midfielder Kristen Dirmaier (South Burlington, Vt.) played the ball in front of the net, where Hine picked it up and scored on a reverse stick shot.

Bates' head coach, Hohlt, called a timeout after Connecticut's go ahead goal and challenged her team to complete the comeback. The Bobcats responded with high intensity and great offensive pressure for the final four and a half minutes, but could not put the ball in the net. The Camels hung on for the 3-2 victory.

First-year Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) had 12 saves for the Bobcats. Steph Quinn (Arlington, Mass.) contributed four saves in the first half and Sheahan added three saves in the second half for the Camels.

Bates looks to rebound against Trinity College at home on Saturday at noon. The Camels will host a non-league game against Wellesley College at 4:30p.m. on Wednesday.
