BANGOR, Maine -- Senior Bryan Wholey scored a season-high 24 points and sophomore Chris Wilson added a career-high 21 to lead the Bates College men's basketball team to its fourth straight win, an 86-77 non-league victory at Husson College on Friday night.
Bates raised its record to 4-3 on the season and finished play for the semester, while the host Eagles dropped to 3-2. The Bobcats' next contests will be at the CUA Classic at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Their first-round game against the City College of New York will tip off at 2 p.m. on Jan. 5.
Wholey (Marshfield, Mass.) hit 9-of-11 shots, including all four of his three-point attempts, while also grabbing nine rebounds and tying Wilson for the team assists lead with five. Wilson, playing near his hometown of Brewer, Maine, added three steals to his sterling effort.
Bates first-year Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) registered his first career double-double, with 12 points and 11 rebounds, as Bates outrebounded Husson 36-21. Senior Pat Halloran (Plymouth, N.H.) chipped in 14 points for the Bobcats.
With starters Ellis, Wholey and Jimmy O'Keefe (Lexington, Mass.) shooting a combined 17-21 in field goals (.809), Bates registered a season-high 55.6 field-goal percentage for the game, including a blazing 62.1 percent in the second half.
Bates trailed by two at the half (40-38), but started the second half on a 15-2 run, with six of their first eight points achieved by O'Keefe jump shots, to build a 12-point cushion at 53-41.
Husson hung around, though, closing the deficit to as few as six points when Brock Bradford's three-pointer capped a 9-1 Eagles run that made it 67-61 with 5:29 left in the game. But a Wholey jumper, two Ellis free throws and a Wholey three quickly stemmed the bleeding and built the lead back to 13, 74-61, with 4:02 remaining.
