Men's basketball cruises past Thomas College, 84-43

Logging only 19 minutes, Bryan Wholey '08 scored 10 points with four rebounds and four assists.

LEWISTON, Maine -- First-year Brian Ellis scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Bates College past Thomas College 84-43 in a non-league men's basketball game on Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) hit 7-of-8 shots from the field and was 3-3 at the foul line.

Fourteen players scored for the Bobcats (3-3), who won their third straight game. Senior Bryan Wholey (Marshfield, Mass.) was the lone Bobcat other than Ellis to score in double figures, with 10 points. He added four rebounds and four assists.

First-year Michael Burchill (Saco, Maine) led the Terriers (3-4) with 11 points and five rebounds.

Sophomore Chris Wilson (Brewer, Maine) scored nine points and dished out six assists for Bates. Scoring college career highs were sophomore Marshall Hatch (Chicago, Ill.) with eight points, first-year Nick Schmiemann (Weymouth, Mass.) with five points and first-years Elliot Foster (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Devin De La Cruz (East Greenwich, R.I.) with two apiece.

Sophomore big men Jimmy O'Keefe (Lexington, Mass.) and Sean Wirth (Barrington, R.I.) both submitted solid performances. O'Keefe scored eight points with six rebounds and two blocks in just 16 minutes, while Wirth produced six points and six rebounds.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 9-0 lead, with a pair of Ellis hoops followed by a Wilson three and a steal and layup by senior Pat Halloran (Plymouth, N.H.). The lead continued to build until Wilson's three with a minute left put Bates ahead 42-20 at the half. Bates started off the second half the same way, with an 11-4 run putting them ahead by 29 (53-24) with 16:08 remaining in the game. Bates built the lead as high as 43 in the final minute.

Bates was particularly dominant in the paint, outrebounding Thomas by a 55-29 margin and outscoring the Terriers 46-8 in the lane. Bates held Thomas to 26.2 percent shooting from the floor while converting 47.1 percent of its own shots.

Bates will play at Husson College on Friday at 8 p.m. in the Bobcats' final game of the semester.
