BABSON PARK, Mass. -- A 15-2 second-half run by Babson College put the game out of reach in a 69-60 defeat of Bates College in the consolation game of the Babson Men's Basketball Invitational Tournament on Saturday.
Kyle McDonald led the Beavers (1-1) with 22 points while Zach Etten added 16 points and 5 assists.
Bates sophomore Chris Wilson (Brewer, Maine) scored a team-high 13 points for the Bobcats (0-2), while first-year Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) and senior Pat Halloran (Plymouth, N.H.) added 12 apiece, with Halloran grabbing a team-high five rebounds. Senior Bryan Wholey (Marshfield, Mass.) scored 6 points with 4 assists before fouling out in 23 minutes of action. Wholey received recognition on the all-tournament team.
Babson (1-1) jumped out to a 13-point lead midway through the first half, with Peter Skogg's three-pointer putting the Beavers up 23-10 with 8:04 left in the period. Bates answered with a 9-2 run, featuring a layup by Ellis and three free throws by Halloran, closing the gap to six. Wholey hit a three in the final minute to cut the deficit back to six, but Kyle McDonald answered with his own three with 11 seconds left, and the Beavers led 32-23 at the half.
Bates (0-2) fought early in the second half to whittle the Babson lead down to four, as Ellis contributed six points in an 8-0 run, putting Bates behind 35-31 with 16:57 left to play. But George Halcovage stemmed the bleeding with a three at 14:57, beginning a 15-2 run over the next 7 1/2 minutes that put the game out of reach.
For the second straight game, Bates shot the ball over 40 percent from the field, going 20-43 (46.5%), but turnovers were an issue, as they committed 23 while forcing 18 for Babson.
First-year Alex Gallant (Bangor, Maine) submitted a solid contribution from off the bench, with 7 points and 4 rebounds.
Bates will play at Southern Maine on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m., in the second game of a men's and women's doubleheader.
