Clement, Linton play final home matches for volleyball

LEWISTON, Maine -- Visiting Tufts University encountered little resistance in rolling to a 3-0 defeat of Bates College Wednesday night in a NESCAC volleyball match. Winning for the eighth time in their past nine matches, the Jumbos (16-12, 5-3 NESCAC) won by game scores of 30-13, 30-13 and 30-21, dropping Bates to 7-22 overall and 0-8 in conference play.


Sophomore Liz Leberman led the Bobcats with seven kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Elise Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill.) added eight digs, eight assists and three kills. Other Bates leaders included junior Beth Billington (St. Paul, Minn.) with three blocks and four kills and sophomore Brit Johnston (Winter Park, Colo.) with 10 digs.

First-year Caitlin Updike (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) recorded a match-high 11 kills along with eight digs to lead the Jumbos. Junior Kate Denniston (Tarzana, Calif.) added nine kills, senior Katie Wysham (Spokane, Wash.) had eight kills, and junior Stacy Filocco (Olney, Md.) added 17 digs.

Playing in their final home matches for Bates, senior co-captains Brittany Clement (Gobles, Mich.) contributed eight assists and four digs, and Jenn Linton (West Redding, Conn.) had two kills and two service aces.

Bates has two NESCAC matches remaining, at Amherst on Saturday at 12 p.m. and at Bowdoin on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Tufts will play Bowdoin at Amherst College on Friday at 8 p.m.
