Volleyball tops UMass-Dartmouth, is edged by Bowdoin

Katie Graeff '07 was named to the Bates Invitational All-Tournament Team.

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team finished up its home Bates Invitational on Saturday at 2-2, with a 3-0 win over UMass-Dartmouth followed by a narrow 3-2 loss to Bowdoin.

The Bobcats (8-10) put away the visiting Corsairs (5-8) by scores of 33-31, 30-24 and 30-20 in the morning matchup. First-year Tess Dokus (Salem, Conn.) had a team-high 11 kills for Bates, while senior Katie Graeff had 23 assists. First-year Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) notched four service aces and sophomore Beth Billington (St. Paul, Minn.) added five kills.

Bates had the chance for its best victory of the season against Bowdoin (12-3), taking two out of the first three games, but the Polar Bears gained momentum during the fourth game and carried it into the tiebreaker for a 25-30, 30-18, 26-30, 30-24, 15-5 win.

Dokus notched a team-high 10 kills in the match, while Leberman, Billington and Linton each collected eight. Leberman had a team-high 23 digs and Billington led the Bobcats with four blocks. Graeff tallied 33 assists.

Graeff was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Bates will next play host to Wheaton (Mass.) College and the University of Dallas during Parents & Family Weekend, on Oct. 7, as part of the Mid Coast Invitational.
