LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team outlasted Worcester State College 3-2 in the opening match of the Bates Invitational on Friday, before losing 3-1 to Colby in the nightcap.

The Bobcats (7-9) defeated the Lancers by a 29-31, 30-18, 30-20, 23-30, 16-14 score. Senior Katie Graeff (Potomac, Md.) dished out 53 assists and served seven aces. First-year Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) led four Bobcats with double figures in kills with 15, along with first-year Tess Dokus's (Salem, Conn.) 12, first-year Avery Masters' (Mill Valley, Calif.) 11 and sophomore Beth Billington's (St. Paul, Minn.) 10. Junior Jenn Linton (Redding, Conn.) added six kills, three blocks and six aces.

Bates played some of its most inspired volleyball of the season in a 30-25, 30-24, 27-30, 30-19 loss to Colby. Linton paced the Bobcats with 10 kills, four aces and five blocks, while Leberman also totaled 10 kills, many of them big rally-killers. Graeff had 25 assists, Masters added eight kills and three blocks, and Dokus finished with six kills.
