Bates women rout Amherst, clinch home playoff game

Meg Coffin '07 tied a career high with 18 rebounds, as the Bobcats outboarded the Lord Jeffs 45-31.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Meg Coffin scored 18 points and tied her career high with 18 rebounds as the Bates College women's basketball team ran away with an 83-41 victory over Amherst College in a NESCAC contest Friday night.


It was Bates' second-highest margin of victory this year, after a 94-51 win over Babson on Jan. 17.

The Bobcats (16-7, 7-1 NESCAC) clinched a home game in the NESCAC playoffs next weekend with the victory, and remain tied atop the league standings with one game left in the regular season, tomorrow afternoon vs. Trinity College.

Jenny Muller (Andover, Mass.) led the Lord Jeffs (9-13, 4-4 NESCAC) with 14 points, all of them scored in the first half.

Bates went on a 21-4 run to open the second half, building a 54-28 lead that the Bobcats extended the rest of the way, outscoring Amherst 50-17 in the second period. Amherst was held to 31.4 percent shooting from the floor, including 24.0 percent in the second half, while Bates shot 51.4 percent in the second half.

Coffin (Westford, Mass.) shot 8-12 from the floor and also had three assists, two blocks and two steals. Her 18 rebounds were her highest since she pulled down the same number in the NCAA Tournament last season against Emmanuel College.

Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) added 14 points for Bates, with Val Beckwith (12 points) and Maggie Fitzgerald (10) also putting up double-digits in scoring. Sarah Barton dished out eight assists.
