LEWISTON, Maine -- A layup by Caitlyn Bailey (Barre, Vt.) and a pair of free throws by Kristi Powlovich (Jericho, Vt.) in the final minute gave Norwich University a 66-63 victory over Bates College in a see-saw non-league women's basketball game Saturday night.

Norwich, which defeated Bates at home eight days ago, stays unbeaten at 8-0 while Bates falls to 5-3.

Sophomore Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) hit a pair of free throws, creating the 10th tie of the game and Bates' last lead of the game at 61-60, with 1:01 left to go. Bailey's layup with 41 seconds remaining gave Norwich its fifth lead of the second half. The teams led four times apiece in the first half.

A three-point attempt by first-year Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) was blocked by Norwich's Sarah Chap (Stockbridge, Vt.) and collected by Powlovich, who was fouled by first-year Teal Carroll (Norwich, Vt.). She hit both foul shots and saw sophomore Val Beckwith's three-point attempt with two seconds left in the game miss, sealing the victory.

Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) scored a game- and career-high 25 points and added a career-high-tying 11 rebounds for Bates. Junior Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) added 18 points and seven rebounds before fouling out of the game with 3:10 remaining and the score tied at 57. Junior Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) had a game-high nine assists to go with six rebounds and three steals.

Powlovich led five Cadets in double figures with 14 points, while both Bailey and Chap recorded double-doubles, with 13 points and 13 rebounds for Bailey, and 11 and 10 for Chap. Monica Selander (Caribou, Maine) added 10 points off the bench.

Norwich shot an identical 11-for-26 from the floor (42.3 percent) in both halves and hit 6-of-13 from behind the arc. Bates hit 4-of-22 three-point attempts (18.2%) and 21-of-61 (34.4%) overall.

After falling behind early 6-1, Bates reeled off 13 straight points to take a 14-6 lead. Kostakis scored the first nine points of the run.

The Cadets clawed back into a tie at 19, capped by a three by Powlovich, and a layup by Selander gave them a 21-19 edge. The teams continued to trade leads into intermission, as a three by Kayleigh Shappy with 1:01 on the clock gave Norwich a 32-31 halftime lead.

Bates built a nine point lead in the opening minutes of the first half, outscoring Norwich 19-9 over the first 7 1/2 minutes, a run that included nine points by Beckwith and three-pointers by first-year Kellie Goodridge (Merrimack, N.H.) and senior Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.).

But Norwich answered with a 9-0 run over three minutes, with four points by Bailey, a three by Shappy and a jumper by Chap, tying the score at 50 with 9:36 left to play. Neither team led by more than three points the rest of the way.
