NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- Norwich University went on a 19-8 run over the final 11 1/2 minutes to defeat the Bates College women's basketball team, 68-56, in the opening game of the 2006 Ed Hockenbury Classic at Andrews Hall. With the win, Norwich improves to 5-0, while Bates goes to 3-2.
NU jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the contest before Bates tied the score at seven. With eight minutes gone by, the Bobcats went up 12-10. Norwich then outscored Bates, 20-10 over an eight and a half minute stretch for a 30-22 lead. The Bobcats responded with a 10-5 run and went to the locker room trailing 35-32.
In the second half, Norwich built its first double-digit lead at 43-32 at the 18:18 mark. Bates rattled off a 14-4 run to make it a one-point ballgame, 49-48, with 12:08 to play. Norwich answered with the 19-8 run to close out the game.
Four Norwich players finished in double figures with Kayleigh Shappy leading the charge with 20 points. Caitlyn Bailey posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Sarah Chap and Monica Selander each chipped in a dozen points.
Junior Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) led five Bobcats in double figures with 12 points and 12 rebounds. First-year Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) and sophomore Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) added 11 apiece. Junior Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) scored 10 points with a team-high six assists. First-year Teal Carroll (Norwich, Vt.) scored 10 points, shooting 3-for-5 from three-point territory.
Bates will play Newbury College in the second game of the Ed Hockenbury Classic Saturday at 2 p.m. at Norwich University.
