WATERVILLE, Maine -- Junior Bryan Wholey (Marshfield, Mass.) and first-year Chris Wilson (Brewer, Maine) both had 17 points to lead the Bates College men's basketball team to an 82-69 win over Colby College in a non-conference game Wednesday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Bates improves to 5-0 overall, while Colby falls to 2-3. The two teams will play their New England Small College Athletic Conference game at Bates on February 9.
Senior Zak Ray (Bangor, Maine) added 16 points, six assists and three steals for the Bobcats, while senior Rob Stockwell (Temple, N.H.) had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, and added three steals as well.
Drew Cohen (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) led all scorers with 23 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. With Bates leading 59-53 with 6:48 left in the contest, Cohen went down with an injury and was unable to return to the game. Bates slowly pulled away from that point.
Just minutes prior to Cohen's injury, Stockwell sparked a run that gave Bates the lead for good. He canned a 3-pointer from the top of the circle, with Cohen's hand in his face, to put the Bobcats ahead 52-48 with 10:02 remaining in the game. Stockwell immediately followed with a steal and a layup, and followed a Cohen free throw with another layup for a 56-49 lead with 9:18 to play.
Colby received 13 points from Nick Farrell (Aspen, Colo.).
The game was tied 33-33 at halftime after Bates led by as much as 10 points in the first half.
Stockwell's 15 points moved him up four spots on Bates' all-time career scoring list, into a tie with Brian Gerrity '05 with 1,209 points. Along the way, he passed Tim Collins '92 (1,196), Jim Marois '77 (1,198) and Herb Taylor '84 (1,205).
