LEWISTON, Maine -- An early first-half goal by Samantha Rothkopf stood up as the game-winner as the Bates College field hockey team defeated Rhodes College 1-0 in a non-league contest Sunday at Campus Avenue Field.
The visiting Lynx, of Nashville, Tenn., fall to 8-4 overall. They're 4-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Bates improves to 5-5 overall, including a 4-0 mark in non-league play.
Rothkopf, a first-year back from Chicago, was set up by junior Erin Chandler (Thornton, Pa.) on senior Allison Marshall's (Princeton, N.J.) penalty corner just six minutes and 15 seconds into the contest. It was Rothkopf's first collegiate goal.
Bates outshot Rhodes 23-4 in the game, but withstood a pressure-filled final three minutes as the Lynx kept the ball near the Bates goal.
Bates senior Sarah Sprague (Cleveland, Ohio) made one save to earn the shutout. Rhodes first-year Julz Anderson (Richmond, Va.) had three saves.
Bates will play at Trinity College in a NESCAC contest Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. Rhodes will play at Bowdoin College on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
