LEWISTON, Maine -- Winners of Day 1 matches at the nine-team Bates Invitational women's volleyball tournament on Friday were Bates College, Colby College (2), Bowdoin College, Springfield College (2), Colby-Sawyer (2) and UMass-Dartmouth.
Overall wins and head-to-head results will determine the Saturday's tournament winner.
Results of the final 8 p.m. matches:
Colby-Sawyer defeated Bowdoin, 3-1 (30-12, 28-30, 30-12, 30-24).
Colby defeated Plymouth State, 3-0 (30-21, 30-24, 30-22). The Mule leaders included Megan Devlin with 15 kills, 9 digs; Cait Cleaver 13 kills, 11 digs and three aces; and Kendall Kirby 19 digs, six aces.
Springfield defeated Bates, 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 30-17)
Results of 4 p.m matches:
Bates defeated Johnson & Wales, 3-0 (30-22, 23-30, 31-29, 30-21) with senior Jasmine McDavid '06 having 15 kills, junior Katie Graeff 20 digs and 45 assists, and first-year Katherine Dexter 23 digs.
Colby-Sawyer def. Worcester State, 3-0 (30-15, 30-20, 30-14) with sophomore Suzie Kaegi getting 11 kills and 8 aces, sophomore Jessica Niebuhr 15 assists and junior Sarah Blume 10 digs and 12 assists. Junior Anne Coulter chipped in with nine kills and one block.
Bowdoin defeated UMass-Dartmouth, 3-1 (30-23, 30-18, 28-30, 30-23), with junior Julie Calareso having seven kills, 15 digs and six aces, junior Erin Prifogle 12 kills and 11 aces, and junior Margo Linton adding 45 assists. Senior Ellie Simon had eight kills and five blocks.
Results of 6 p.m. matches:
UMass-Dartmouth defeated Worcester State, 3-0 (30-19, 30-26, 30-19). For Worcester State in both matches, Jodi Nascimento had 17 total kills.
Colby defeated Johnson & Wales, 3-0 (30-19, 30-18, 30-11). First-year Genevieve Lawrence had 30 assists, senior Mariah Daly nine kills, Kendall Kirby (libero) 18 digs and seven aces, senior Megan Devlin six kills and senior Cait Cleaver six kills and 14 digs
Springfield defeated Plymouth State, 3-1 (30-24, 23-30, 30-21, 30-26). Junior Leah Hettrick had 35 digs, senior Alesia Vaccari, 59 assists and senior Ashley Reves 24 kills.
Matches on Saturday are Colby-Sawyer vs. Springfield, Johnson & Wales vs. UMass-Dartmouth and Worcester St. vs. Plymouth St. (10 a.m.); Colby vs. Springfield, Bowdoin vs. Johnson & Wales and Bates vs. UMass-Dartmouth (12:30 p.m.); and Bates vs. Plymouth St., Colby vs. Colby-Sawyer and Bowdoin vs. Worcester St. (3 p.m.).
