AMHERST, Mass. -- The Bates College volleyball team was swept in two matches during opening-day action at the 16-team 2005 Volleyball Hall of Fame Tournament on Friday. Bates lost to MIT 30-22, 30-23, 30-21, before falling to Endicott College 30-24, 30-25, 30-17.
Junior Katie Graeff (Chevy Chase, Md.) had 17 assists and 15 digs for Bates in the MIT match, while senior Liz Santy (Farmington, Conn.) led the front line with nine kills to go with six digs. First-years Katherine Dexter (Seattle) and Beth Billington (St. Paul, Minn.) made solid contributions with 10 digs and four blocks, respectively, while junior Lauren Gold (Sacramento, Calif.) came up with 13 digs.
Senior Jasmine McDavid (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the front line with eight kills against Endicott, followed by sophomore Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) with eight. Graeff contributed 22 assists and eight digs in the match.
The top-ranked teams in each of the four pools were Wellesley, MIT, Springfield and Smith.
Having finished fourth in Pool B, Bates (5-20) will play two additional matches in the consolation bracket at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday, beginning with a 10 a.m. match against Gordon College.
