Led by first-year coxswain Hannah Herbst, the Bates women's first varsity eight had an outstanding weekend in Massachusetts.

It started on Saturday when the first varsity eight defeated the defending NCAA Division III champion and No. 1 nationally ranked Tufts University Jumbos by nearly four seconds on the Malden River, with the Bobcats crossing the finish line in 7:17.9 and Tufts finishing runner-up in 7:21.4. 

On Sunday, the Bates 1V won their heat on Lake Quinsigamond. Then they won their grand final as Bates took first place over No. 4 nationally ranked Trinity, No. 12 William Smith, No. 9 WPI, and No. 8 Wellesley, racing to the finish in 6:43.4. The Bantams finished runner-up in 6:47.76.

Bates women's rowing entered the weekend ranked 5th in the country. With their victories, the Bobcats made a statement that the race for the national championship is wide open.
