First-year Maddy Kwei finished second out of 24 competitors to lead the Bates women's golf team to second place at the State of Maine Invitational at Brunswick Golf Club on Sunday. 

Kwei (Pasadena, Calif.) finished at three over par, just one stroke back of medalist Abbie Kaestle of Bowdoin. Kwei shot a 38 on the front nine, good for even par after birdies on the eighth and ninth holes. The two stood tied after 16 holes in a close battle down the stretch.

Kwei also finished in the top 10 in her collegiate debut, tying for 10th out of 34 competitors at the Polar Bear Shootout on Saturday.
