First-year Bart Rust (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.) won the 5,000 meters (15:10.19) and placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:09.30) at the 120th Maine State Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at Bowdoin.

Rust finished second to teammate senior Nico Johnson in the steeplechase and came back later in the day to clinch the team title for Bates, outracing four Bowdoin seniors to win the 5K, the second-to-last event of the meet.

The Bobcats scored 233 points for first place, followed by the host Polar Bears (229), Southern Maine (120), Colby (15), Saint Joseph's (13) and UMaine-Farmington (4).

Bates snapped Bowdoin's two-year run as state champions and won the meet for the 15th time in the past 18 years.
