Junior Caroline Falcone tallied a career-high five goals in Bates field hockey’s season-opening 8-2 win over Thomas College on Sept. 5 to gain the first female Bobcat of the Week award in 2013-14.

In the first game of head coach Danielle Ryder’s tenure, the New Canaan, Conn., native came one goal shy of tying Bates’ all-time record for goals in a game which was set by Priscilla Wilde ’77 against Maine-Farmington in 1976. Falcone scored on five of her six shots taken.

Falcone scored two of the Bobcats’ three first-half goals to help give the team a 3-0 halftime lead. She scored her first goal unassisted before taking a pass from first-year Sydney Cowles on her second goal. The New Canaan High School product then scored the first two goals of the second half to stake the Bobcats to a 5-0 lead at 39:30. She posted her fifth goal with under 30 seconds remaining.

Bates and Falcone return to action on Wednesday at Husson at 7 p.m. The team’s next home game comes on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. against Bowdoin.
