Bates College men’s rowing’s first varsity eight boat won the grand final at the Tufts Races on Saturday and finished a close second at WPI on Sunday to gain Bobcat of the Week honors for the week of April 7-13.
On Saturday on the Malden River, the first varsity eight boat captured a win in its first heat against Tufts with a time of 6:06.7 to the Jumbos’ 6:11.1. The Bobcats then emerged victorious in the grand final with a time of 6:10.9, ahead of Wesleyan's 6:14.6.
Racing for the second time in as many days after not competing since March 29, the crew nearly nipped WPI, but the host Engineers edged the Bobcats 6:06.1 to 6:06.3 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., on Sunday. The race took place in calm conditions with a slight tailwind.
Senior coxswain Jacob Sandor (Montclair, N.J.), sophomore stroke Welles Mathison (Plymouth, N.H.), senior 7-seat Sam MacGregor (Princeton, N.J.), senior 6-seat Hank Schless (Old Greenwich, Conn.), junior 5-seat Nicholas Flynn (Wilton, Conn.), sophomore 4-seat Nicholas Muccio (Concord, N.H.), senior 3-seat Cody Jenkins (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), junior 2-seat Matthew Silverman (Lafayette, N.J.), and senior bow Caleb Glassman (Radnor, Pa.) comprised the crew.
The Bobcats next compete on Saturday at Boston College.
