Senior captain Matthew Gagne (Winnetka, Ill.) made a statement in the first swim meet of his senior year, claiming first place in three individual events in Bates' dual meet at Wesleyan, and also contributing to the Bobcats' winning 200-yard medley relay team.

Gagne teamed with junior Ben Sommer (Evanston, Ill.), senior captain Andrew Briggs (York, Maine) and sophomore Jack Dina (Kenilworth, Ill.) to win the 200 medley relay in 1:38.15, the first race of the season.

He went on to win the 200 butterfly in 1:58.60, the 100 fly in 52.34 seconds and the 200 IM (2:02.62), leading the Bates men to a 204-94 win over the host Cardinals.

Gagne and his teammates had enough left over to dominate Trinity College the following day by a 234-48 score, with Gagne again teaming with Sommer, Briggs and Dina to win the opening 200 medley relay in 1:38.78.

Gagne, who became Bates' first male swimmer to compete at the NCAA Championship in a decade, finished off his impressive weekend with a victory in the 50 butterfly, touching the wall in 23.68 seconds.
