First-year Caroline Apathy broke the Bates women's swim team record and took second place in the 50-yard butterfly, highlighting the first day of the NESCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships Friday at Williams College.

Apathy (Devon, Pa.) finished only 0.08 seconds behind Connecticut College sophomore Lily Gribbel in the championship final of the 50 fly with her time of 24.91 seconds. The former team record in the event (25.01) was set by sophomore teammate Janika Ho at last year's NESCAC championship meet.

On Saturday, Apathy finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.44 seconds. All-NESCAC honors go to top-three event performances.

On Sunday, Apathy and her teammates finished the 400-yard freestyle relay race in 3:29.07, 0.45 ahead of fourth-place Bowdoin for the third and final all-conference spot.
