Bates College

Tom Jansen joined the Bates College Department of Athletics in 2026 as Aquatics & Pool Operations Manager and Assistant Swimming Coach.

Jansen came to Bates after serving as lead assistant coach for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming and diving programs from 2024-26. In that role, he worked extensively in recruiting and student-athlete development, designed training plans for distance swimmers, provided on-deck coaching and video analysis, and assisted with the program's day-to-day operations.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Jansen served as aquatics manager from 2025-26, overseeing a staff of 20 lifeguards along with scheduling, facility coordination and safety compliance.

Jansen previously spent the 2023-24 season as lead assistant coach at Occidental College, where he contributed to practice planning, recruiting, meet preparation and race strategy while also overseeing a variety of team operations. He also served a two-week stint as interim head coach, directing the program's training and operations.

During Jansen's collegiate coaching career, the programs he has worked with have produced a pair of NCAA Division III individual national champions, numerous All-America performances and conference and program records. His coaching résumé also includes experience with swim camps and clubs at the University of Maryland, Kenyon College, Claremont High School and several community and masters swimming programs.

Jansen earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Redlands in 2022 and completed a certificate in human resources in 2023. He is a Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor and holds certifications in lifeguarding, CPR/AED for professional rescuers and first aid. He is also a Certified Pool Operator.
