Katharine “Katy” Ott serves as the faculty liaison for the Bates field hockey program. A member of the Bates faculty since 2014, Ott is a professor of mathematics whose teaching spans the mathematics curriculum, including Calculus, Linear Algebra, Real Analysis, Mathematics for Social Justice, and senior seminars in Mathematical Exposition and Series.

Ott graduated from Middlebury College in 2003 and earned her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Virginia in 2008. She spent three years as a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow and three years as an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky before returning to her home state of Maine. She grew up in Cumberland.

Her research focuses on the intersection of Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations. Ott is also committed to making mathematics accessible to broader audiences through public-facing writing and outreach activities.
