What does leadership mean to you?
To me, leadership means having a strong work ethic and leading by example.
What experience—big or small—has made a surprising impact on you?
When I was a freshman in high school, a senior invited me to try pole vaulting. His mentorship inspired me to commit to vaulting and I have since encouraged younger athletes to try pole vault as well. This year, our team went from one to seven pole vaulters.
What’s a failure or setback that taught you something valuable?
Two days before Connecticut State Opens, I snapped my pole. This was the first time that’s ever happened to me. The only thing I could do was borrow a pole from another athlete during the meet in order to participate. I learned a lot about adaptability and camaraderie.
What’s a value or principle you try to live by?
Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
What’s something about you that might surprise people?
I am a Minnesota Vikings fan.
