Skip Capone spent 22 seasons as an assistant coach for the Bobcats.
In his time at Bates, Capone coached three All-NESCAC defensive linemen (Kurt Chapman '04, Terence Ryan '07, Anthony Begon '08). Ryan holds Bates' career and single-season quarterback sack records, and was named All-New England Divisions II/III in 2006. While special teams coordinator, Capone helped punters David Kurey '15 and Gavin Segall-Abrams '11 and kicker Charlie Donahue '14 earn All-NESCAC laurels.
A vital recruiter for the program, Coach Capone recruited 11 players who went on to become team captains.
Prior to Bates, Capone was the head coach at Lewiston High School, where he won three coach of the year awards, while leading the Blue Devils to 10 playoff appearances, two state championship games and one state title, winning at a clip of over 70 percent in his time.
Coach Capone looms as a major presence in the ranks of Maine football coaches. He developed the concept and helped establish the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic high school all-star game, and he established and still directs the Maine Football Coaches Association's clinic, which attracts over 300 high school and college coaches annually. He also developed the first camp for offensive and defensive linemen in the state.
Coach Capone's recruiting areas included New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and Massachusetts' 508 area code.
Capone graduated from Plymouth State in 1977, where he was a three-year starter and captained the Panthers as a senior. Capone's extensive coaching career began at Dover (N.H.) High School, and he went on to lead the defensive line at Plymouth State before filling the same role at Southwest Missouri State (now known as Missouri State).
Skip resides in Auburn with his wife, Marie, and has two adult children.
