Bates College

Ian joined the Bobcats in 2021. He brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the Bates field hockey program. He still plays with the USA men’s Masters team and has played in seven outdoor and four indoor world cups and has over 50 International caps.

Ian grew up in England where he learned the game, playing at high school, university, club and regional levels before moving to the USA in 1999. Initially based in Phoenix, he was involved in playing and coaching with the Arizona State University Sun Devils.

In 2010 he became a US citizen and in 2017 moved to Maine for work. In early 2023 Ian retired from his full time career in IT to do what he enjoys the most, following his passion for field hockey.

Ian is a USFHA Level III coach and has umpired National Championships and even unofficial internationals. Outside of his duties at Bates, he assists with umpire and coach education and has recently managed both the US junior men's and women's teams in international competitions.

Ian is married to Penny and has two daughters, Ella and Molly, and one granddaughter, Evelyn.
