Kiely Irene
Barnard-Webster A French and politics double major
from Hartford, Connecticut, Kiely is a three-year letter winner in
softball, as well as a two-year participant in soccer. She was
elected to the NESCAC Spring All-Sportsmanship Team in both 2011
and 2012 and received recognition twice as a NESCAC All-Academic
Team member and NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete. Kiely’s
French thesis title is: “Les Pauvres Fils deCham,” and
her politics thesis is titled: “Aggressive Vindicationist
Neoconservatism: A Story of Reconstruction Failure in Iraq.”
Next year, Kiely will be volunteering in Managua, Nicaragua, with a
non-profit called the Manna Project. She will be a program director
for their women’s fitness program. |

Mariah Marilyn Clarke Barstow A biology
major from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mariah is a three-year
letter winner in women’s soccer. She has earned distinction
as a NESCAC All-Academic team member, as a member of the Sigma Xi
Scientific Research Society, and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Her
honors thesis title is: “Working Toward Pragmatic and
Sustainable Exclusive Breastfeeding Practices Among Somali Mothers
in Lewiston, Maine.”

Erika Brace Blauth Erika is a psychology
major from Camden, Maine, and a four-year letter winner in tennis.
A team captain during her junior and senior years, Erika was voted
team MVP in 2011. She was also named to a NESCAC Spring
All-Academic selection. Erika’s thesis title is:
“Through the Eyes of a Somali: A Study of Religious and
Ethnic Identities, Acculturation Attitudes, and Academic Beliefs of
Somali-American Students at Lewiston High School.” Next year,
Erika will be working for the Schuler Scholar Program in
Chicago.

Nicolle Hyun Bugajski Hailing from
Brookline, Massachusetts, Nicolle majored in sociology and played
tennis for three years at Bates. She is the co-editor for the Bates
Sociology Journal, a Baccalaureate Diversity Pledge Committee
member, a peer writer, and a community-based research fellow.
Nicolle’s honors thesis title is: "'That was all me. I did
it. And the government helped me, definitely, but if I didn’t
put forth the effort, I wouldn’t have come anywhere. It was a
mix.' Perceptions of Individual Versus Government Responsibility to
Help the Poor." Nicolle is in the process of applying for research
associate/operational positions in Boston and New York.

Elizabeth Elaine
Carleton Elizabeth is a psychology major from
Westborough, Massachusetts, and a member of the indoor and outdoor
track and field teams for four years. A team captain, she is the
school record holder in the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400-meter relays.
Elizabeth has been named to the NESCAC All-Academic Team two times
and is also a member of Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. The
title of Elizabeth’s thesis is: “Incubation of Nicotine
Craving as Evidenced by Locomotor Sensitization.” |

Sean Michael
Colligan Sean is a team captain and four-year member
of the cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams.
A neuroscience major from Goffstown, New Hampshire, Sean is a
six-time NESCAC All-Academic selection. His thesis title is:
“Alexithymia and Working Memory: Performances on ta
Recency-Probes WM Task.” |

Jenna Elisabeth
Dannis A politics major from Dalton, New Hampshire,
Jenna is a four-year letter winner and captain in lacrosse and a
two-year letter winner in field hockey. Jenna earned All-NESCAC
honors in 2010, 2011 and 2012, as well as NESCAC Spring
All-Academic selection. In addition, she was named an ECAC
All-Star, a Division III All-Rookie Team member (2009), a four-time
All-Region player, and a national All-American. The title of her
thesis is “The EMU’s design and policy flaws: The role
of national politics.” After graduation, Jenna will be
working as an investment banking analyst at Raymond James. |

Devin Matthew
Dilts Devin is a history and Spanish double major
from Roscoe, Illinois. A four-year letter winner and captain in
cross country and a three-year letter winner in track and field,
Devin was recognized with the Athletic department’s Milt L.
Lindholm Scholar Athlete Award as the male student-athlete
graduating with the highest cumulative grade point average. He has
earned All-NESCAC, All-State, All-ECAC, and All-New England honors,
as well as being recognized as an Academic All-American in cross
country this past season, and he ran in two NCAA Division III Cross
Country Championships. His Spanish thesis is titled: “La
Virgen de Guadalupe y su posición como el símbolo
mexicano;” and his thesis in history is: “The Power of
the Individual Relative to the Athenian Assembly during the
Peloponnesian War.” |

Allison Oliver
DiSalvo Allison is a biology major from Lowell,
Massachusetts, and a captain and four-year letter winner in
women’s rowing. A two-time NESCAC All-Conference selection in
rowing, she is also two-time NESCAC Spring All-Academic selection.
In addition, she has earned National Scholar Athlete accolades
three times and was named to the NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Allison also was a member of the NCAA national runner-up crew in
2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. An Arthur Vining Davis Grant Recipient,
her thesis title is: “Effects of Developmental Hyperoxia on
Spiracle Opening in Drosophila Melanogaster.” She will attend
chiropractic school in the fall of 2013. |

Lauren Elizabeth
Dobish A psychology major from Chambersburg,
Pennsylvania, Lauren is a four-year letter winner in softball and
basketball and a three-year letter winner in soccer. She served as
a team captain for both basketball and softball. She has been
recognized as a NESCAC All-Academic Team member for both basketball
and softball and an All-NESCAC Team member in softball. In addition
to being named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America
Scholar Athlete, Lauren holds two softball program records. Her
thesis title is: The Collective Impact of the Dud Effect and the
Appearance-Change Instruction on Eyewitness Confidence.” |

Casey Anna
Dropkin Casey is a four-year letter winner in cross
country and indoor and outdoor track and field. A biochemistry and
mathematics double major from Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, she
is a five-time NESCAC All-Academic Team member and a Phi Beta Kappa
honoree; she will graduate magna cum laude. Casey’s thesis
title is: “Creating Tools to Elucidate the Mechanisms of
Regulating the Long Transcript Form of RpoS in Borrelia
burgdorferi.” This fall Casey will begin pursuing a Doctor of
Veterinary Medicine degree at the Cummings School of Veterinary
Medicine at Tufts University. |

Rebecca Anne
Dugan Rebecca is an environmental studies major from
Port Murray, New Jersey, and a four-year letter winner in cross
country, indoor and outdoor track. She was a captain of all three
teams as a senior, and has received two NESCAC All-Sportsmanship
Team selections. In addition, Rebecca earned NESCAC All-Academic
honors six times. The title of Rebecca’s thesis is:
“Healthy Neighborhood Stores: Lewiston Community Member
Preferences Regarding Food Access and Selection.” After
graduation, Rebecca hopes to become a FoodCorps member. |

Jacqueline Louise
Easton A psychology major from Lexington,
Massachusetts, Jacqueline was a member of the soccer team for three
years and received NESCAC Fall All-Academic honors. The title of
her thesis is: “Parental Decision-Making When Selecting a
School for a Child with Autism and the Resulting Post-Decision
Satisfaction.” Jacqueline will begin work in August at the
New England Center for Children, teaching children with
moderate/severe autism. |

Brian Jared
Goldberg Brian is a four-year member of the soccer
team and a history major from New York City. He is a two-time
NESCAC Fall All-Academic selection and received the Men’s
Soccer Alumni Award, as well as the Forrest K. Garderwine Award
from the history department. While at Bates, Brian also served as
the Chief of Service of Bates Emergency Medical Services. The title
of his thesis is: “Inoperable Freedom: The Journey of
Southern African American’s Healthcare from Slavery to
Freedom.” |

Abigail Susan
Hanson Abigail is a French and politics double major
from Sudbury, Massachusetts, and a four-year member of the swimming
team. She was a team captain and holds the team record in the
1,000-yard freestyle. A two-time NESCAC All-Academic honoree, she
also received the swim team’s Coach’s Award and Most
Improved Award. The title of her politics thesis is: “Service
or Empowerment: The Impact of Donor Funding in Non-Govermental
Organizations Working on Health Care in Haiti.” Her French
thesis title is: “La folie franco phone au feminin: Une
analyse des textes de trois femmes.” Abigail will work for
Wilderness Ventures in the Adirondacks this summer and is currently
looking for work in the non-profit sector. |

Luke Hanson
Harmeling Luke is a biology and psychology double
major from North Reading, Massachusetts. He is a four-year member
of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams, and has
received both NESCAC All-Academic and NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team
honors. He has also been elected to Sigma Xi Scientific Research
Society. The title of Luke’s thesis in biology is: “The
Effects of Chronic Hyperoxia on the Metabolism of Neonatal
Rats.” The title of his thesis in psychology is: “The
Effects of Electrolytic Lesions of the Medial Habenula on a
Nicotine-Induced Conditioned Taste Aversion in Rats.” |

Jessica Anne
Howard A biochemistry major from Cumberland Foreside,
Maine, Jessica is a three-year letter winner in swimming. She is
the recipient of the Milton L. Lindholm Scholar-Athlete Award as
the female student-athlete graduating with the highest cumulative
grade point average. In addition, she received the Merck Award in
Chemistry (for excellence and achievement in academic performance),
the Undergraduate Award in analytical chemistry and an
Undergraduate Award in inorganic chemistry, and the Scott Peura
Memorial Prize in Chemistry. She was in the top ten at the NESCAC
Championships in 2012 in the 1M and 3M springboard diving. The
title of Jessica’s thesis is: “Using
(+)-(18-Crown-6)-2,3,11,12-tetracarboxylic Acid as Chiral NMR
Solvating Agent to Discriminate Isoxazoline-fused B-amino Acid
Derivatives.” Jessica will be working as a research scientist
with Albany Molecular Research Inc. at the Eli Lilly headquarters
in Indianapolis. |

Michael Xin Jiang A
political science major from Madison, Connecticut, Michael is a
three-year member of the men's indoor and outdoor track and field
teams, as well as a one-year member of the men's varsity soccer
team. He has earned a place on the NESCAC All-Academic Team three
times and was the State of Maine indoor champion in the 55-meter
dash. His thesis title is: “The Role of Political Risk in
FDI.” Michael will be working in Washington, D.C., for
Chevron Corporation this summer. |

Gwynneth McBride
Johnson Gwynneth is a four-year letter winner in
indoor and outdoor track and field, and an environmental studies
major from Portland, Oregon. She is a three-time NESCAC
All-Academic selection. The title of her thesis is: “Immune
Cell Identification in Liver Lesions of Mice Developmentally
Exposed to Arsenic.” Gwynneth will be participating in the
AmeriCorps program City Year in Boston next year. |

Juliana Marie
Kirkland An anthropology and religion major from
Greene, Maine, Juliana is a three-year member of the indoor and
outdoor track teams and a NESCAC All-Academic selection. She also
received a Harward Center for Community Partnership Summer Grant
for her work in the local community. The title of Juliana’s
thesis in anthropology is: “He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not:
College Perceptions of Romantic and Sexual Relationships.”
Her thesis in religion is titled: "'Clear Eyes, Full Hearts,
Can’t Lose:' An Assessment of Ritual and Reciprocity in the
Show Friday Night Lights." Juliana will be working for Gordon
Research Conferences this summer and will be attending the
University of Maine School of Law in the fall. |

Carole Louise
Lupi A history major from Branford, Connecticut,
Carole is a four-year member of the swimming team. She is a
two-time NESCAC All-Academic selection and received the swim
team’s Most Improved Swimmer award. The title of her thesis
is: “Greater than Matrimony: The Influence of Victoria and
Albert’s Relationship on the Transformed Role of the
Sovereign in Britain’s Modern Constitutional Monarchy.”
Carole will be working this summer with AmeriCorps' VISTA program,
in which she will help in creating and implementing a summer youth
program for children living in low-income areas in New Haven,
Connecticut. |

Leah Elaine
Maciejewski An English and Spanish double major from
Tewksbury, Massachusetts, Leah is a four-year letter winner and a
two-year team captain in softball. This past season Leah earned
CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-Region Team, as well as all-region
honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the New
England Softball Coaches Association. A two-time NESCAC
All-Academic Team member and a winner of the NFCA All-America
Scholar Athlete Award, she is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a
Fulbright Teaching Assistantship awardee. The title of her theses
are: “A Prophetic Vision: The Narrative Authority of Merlin
in Three Arthurian Texts” and “Y Wendy crecio’:
La inertextualidad de los mitos y los cuentos de hadas en la
trilogia de Esther Tusquets.” In October, Leah will be
traveling to Szczecin, Poland, to serve as a Fulbright Teaching
Assistant for nine months. |

Sarah Lauren
Merullo Sarah is a four-year letter winner and a team
captain in field hockey. A Spanish major from Essex, Massachusetts,
she was a two-time selection to the NESCAC All-Academic Team and
member of the NFHCA Academic Honor Roll from 2009 to 2012. The
title of her thesis is: "La creacion de la identidad
puertorriqueria en el tercer espacio en las novelas 'Nilda' and
'When I was Puerto Rican.'" Sarah taught Spanish at Lewiston High
School during winter semester 2011 and would love to teach high
school Spanish and coach field hockey full-time. |

Tessa Marie Pals A
chemistry major from Wilmette, Illinois, Tessa is a three-year
letter winner and team captain in golf, as well as a two-time
NESCAC Fall All-Academic selection. In addition, she received the
Excellence in Service and Leadership Award in chemistry and is a
Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society member. The title of her
thesis is: “Synthesis of Ashitabaol A: A Recently Discovered,
Natural Compound.” After graduation, Tessa will be a research
technician at Elevance Renewable Sciences. |

Caroline Winthrop
Pierce Caroline is a four-year letter winner and team
captain in lacrosse and a women and gender studies major from
Weston, Massachusetts. She is the 2012 recipient of the lacrosse
team’s Coach's Award and a two-time NESCAC All-Academic Team
honoree. In addition, Caroline has been elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
The title of her thesis is: “Cutting Open Health:
Understanding the Health-Morality Dilemma Through
C-sections.” |

Piers A biology major from Falmouth, Maine, Taylor is
a four-year indoor and outdoor track athlete and served as the
captain of both teams. She is a four-time NESCAC All-Academic
selection and a school record holder in the long jump. Her thesis
title is: “Reduction in dys-1 by Induction of RNAi Causes
Hypercontracted and Hyperactive Phenotypes in
C.elegans.” |

Reilly A mathematics and economics double major from
Wellesley, Massachusetts, Margaret is a four-year letter winner in
lacrosse. She is a two-time NESCAC All-Academic selection and a
member of the Bates College Key Honor Society. Her thesis title is
"Willingness to Pay for Fair Trade Coffee: A Hedonic Model." After
graduation, Margaret will work as an analyst at Analysis Group in
Boston. |

Sirianni An economics and French double major from
Holliston, Massachusetts, Amanda is a four-year letter winner in
soccer. She is a two-time NESCAC All-Academic selection and
received the Albion Morse Stevens Award, given to the best
first-year foreign language student, as well as the winner of the
Envie d’Ecrire Award, a French department writing award. The
title of her economics thesis is: “Health Risks and New
Mercury Rules.” Her thesis in French is: “Le marriage
dans deux romans champetres de George Sand.” |

Haley Russell
Sive A geology and French double major from
Glenville, New York, Haley is a four-year letter winner and team
captain in women’s rowing. She was a three-time First Team
All-NESCAC honoree, and received Second Team All-America honors
from the College Rowing Coaches Association this week. Over four
years, Haley helped Bates qualify for the NCAA Women's Rowing
Championships four times and finish as the national runner-up all
four times. Haley is an Arata Scholar and member of both Sigma Xi
Scientific Research Society and Phi Beta Kappa. Her thesis title
is: “The Structure and Stratigraphy of Small Point, Maine: D3
Inverted Transtensional Map-Scale Folds of Neoacadian
Provenance.” Haley is also part of the College Choir, Bates
Christian Fellowship and the Gospelaires. This summer she will be
coaching rowing at her high school boathouse in Niskayuna, New
York. She would like to study scientific journalism in graduate
school. |

Richard Keith Sullivan
III Richard is a politics major from Westfield,
Massachusetts, and a four-year member of the swim team. "Kick"
received the swim team’s Coach’s Award in 2010 and the
Most Improved Award in 2011, and is a two-time NESCAC All-Academic
selection. His thesis title is: “Playing by the Rules: Social
Movements and the American Political System.” Richard will be
attending Western New England School of Law in the fall. |

Ullmann An environmental studies major from Ramsey,
New Jersey, Karen is a four-year letter winner in softball. The
holder of seven program records, she was the named the team’s
Most Valuable Player in 2011. Karen earned recognition on the
NESCAC All-Academic Team and was named a NFCA All-American Scholar
Athlete. Her thesis title is: “Direct Producer-to-Consumer
Marketing: A Feasibility Study for Increasing Local Food Access to
Limited Income Communities in Lewiston-Auburn, Maine.” |

Alix Elizabeth
Vandeventer Alix is a four-year letter winner in
soccer and a biology major from North Attleboro, Massachusetts. She
is a two-time NESCAC Fall All-Academic selection and a member of
the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. Alix’s thesis title
is: “Gestational Diabetes in Pregnant Somali Females:
Addressing the Problem.” Alix hopes to attend graduate school
and become a clinical medical practitioner. |

David Bennett
Wood A psychology major from Hopkinton, New
Hampshire, David is a four-year letter winner and team captain in
soccer. He is a member of the 2011 NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team
and a two-time NESCAC All-Academic selection. His thesis title is:
“Behavioral Tracking for Students with Autism Spectrum
Disorders.” The Bates Scholar-Athlete Society was created in
2005 to underscore the College's commitment to the scholar-athlete
ideal. The Society includes seniors nominated by their coaches who
have compiled a 3.5 grade point average or have received a special
nomination from faculty and staff for distinguished academic
achievement in their junior and senior years. To be eligible for
induction, student-athletes must participate in a varsity sport for
at least three years. |
