Bates College

From track star at Bates to neuropsychologist at Brown Karen A. Holler grew up locally in Auburn, Maine, and attended Hebron Academy. She came to Bates as a biology major and joined the women’s soccer, cross country and indoor track and field teams. Karen left a mark at Bates; graduating as a dean’s list student and earning a still-standing Bates record in the indoor high jump. In 1981 Karen was awarded the Robert Plumb Memorial Award in honor of her achievements, her athletic and academic participation in Bates activities and the general demonstration of the Bates spirit. After leaving a large legacy at Bates, Karen graduated in 1983 and completed her master’s and doctorate degrees in clinical neuropsychology at the University of Florida in 1995. She then completed a yearlong internship and a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in clinical neuropsychology at Brown University in 1998. Karen then continued to contribute and be an influential figure in the field of neuropsychology as she joined the clinical staff at Butler Hospital at Brown University. She was appointed to the faculty at Brown’s Alpert Medical School as an assistant clinical professor. For the past 10 years she has been instrumental in training interns, postdoctoral fellows and residents in addition to doing her own clinical research. In 2002 she founded Neuropsychology Associates, whose mission is to help children, adolescents, young adults and their families identify and overcome a wide array of processing, learning, behavioral, social and emotional issues. In 2006 she was awarded with a teaching award from Brown University. Although she is very busy with her own career and family, Karen still finds time to support Bates. She was active as an Alumni-In-Admission volunteer for more than 10 years. She also served on the host committee for the Providence, R.I., campaign for the Bates launch event in 2005. She currently lives in Pawtucket, R.I., with her partner Amy Leidtke and 8-year-old son, Pascal. We thank Karen Holler for her example, support and dedication to Bates.
