Alberto Hailing from Concord, Mass., Alexandria
Alberto was a member of the cross country and track and field
teams. A cross country team captain, she once finished ninth out of
95 runners at a meet at Wesleyan. Alex has earned distinction as a
Bates Athletic Department Academic Honor Roll honoree and as a
two-time NESCAC All-Academic Team member. A French major, her
thesis is titled "The French Indentity: An Exclusive
Collectivity." |

track and field athlete from Okemos, Mich., David Beck earned both
the Bates Athletic Department Scholar-Athlete Award and NESCAC
All-Academic Team recognition. He has also been inducted into the
Phi Beta Kappa honor society. A politics major, his thesis is
titled "Nationhood Across the Wine-Dark Sea: Ethnic Outbidding in
the Mediterranean and Violence in Cyprus, 1964 and 1974." |

Black-Ingersoll A history major from Concord, N.H.,
Tristan Black-Ingersoll is a four-year letter-winner in cross
country, indoor and outdoor track. Tristan has earned distinction
as a Bates Athletic Department Academic Honor Roll honoree and as a
NESCAC All-Academic Team member. His thesis is titled "PARADOX: The
Ultimate Incompatibility of the Amateur Sporting Philosophy with
the World Record Culture which Developed in the Sport of Modern

member of the cross country and track and field teams, Chloe Bourne
is an environmental studies major from Litchfield, Conn., Chloe has
been recognized as a Bates Athletic Department Scholar-Athlete, as
a two-time NESCAC All-Academic Team member and once as an All-State
selection at the Maine State Cross Country Championships. She also
earned a place on the NCAA All-Academic Team in 2008. Her thesis is
titled "The Effect of Landscape Features on Throughfall in the
Washington-Monroe Col, Mount Washington, New Hampshire." |

two-year captain of the volleyball team, Rachel Colby is a
mathematics major with an educational studies minor from
Willimantic, Conn. The four-year letter-winner also earned
distinction as a Bates Athletic Department Scholar-Athlete and
Academic Honor Roll honoree. Rachel is a two-time winner of the
Nellie Bannister Burrill Volleyball Award and a two-time NESCAC
All-Academic Team member. Her senior seminar presentation was
titled "Chaotic Dynamical Systems." |

III An economics major from West Hartford, Conn.,
Douglass Compton is a four-year letter winner and a captain of the
men's squash team. Douglass earned recognition as a Bates Athletic
Department Scholar-Athlete, a NESCAC All-Academic Team member, and
as a College Squash Association Scholar-Athlete. His thesis is
titled "The Determinants of Health Care Expenditures." |

four-year letter-winner and captain of the field hockey team, Zoe
Donaldson is an English major from Mt. Vernon, N.Y. Zoe has been
recognized as a Bates Athletic Department Scholar-Athlete, a
two-time NESCAC All-Academic Team member, and a four-time National
Field Hockey Association Academic Squad member. She has also been
awarded the Nellie Bannister Burrill Field Hockey Award. Zoe has
been inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. The title of
her thesis is "Nonesuch, Poems." |

studio art and French double-major, Kirsten Gill is a Nordic skier
from Jackson, N.H., who earned selection to, and competed at, the
2011 NCAA National Collegiate Skiing Championship. Kirsten also
earned distinction as a Bates Athletic Department Academic Honor
Roll honoree and as a NESCAC All-Academic Team performer. Her
thesis in French is titled "Inventing Difficulty: An Exploration of
the Practice and Theory of Literary Translation." Her studio art
thesis is "A Study in Painting, Exploring Ideas of Femininity and
Sexuality." |

standout thrower on the women's track and field teams, Sara Ellen
Godek is a biological chemistry and studio art double-major from
Gilford, N.H. A captain of both the indoor and outdoor track and
field teams, Sara Ellen is a NESCAC champion in the hammer throw, a
five-time All-ECAC performer, an All-New England honoree, and a
four-time NCAA Championship qualifier. She has earned recognition
as a Bates Athletic Department Academic Honor Roll honoree, as a
member of the NESCAC All-Academic Team, and as a U.S. Track and
Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Academic All-America
Team member. Her thesis titles are: "Tangier Disease: ABCA1
Mechanisms and Treatments of Reverse Cholesterol Transport" and
"Bone Fears." |

Green An English major from New Canaan, Conn.,
Charlotte Green is a four-year letter-winner, captain, and the MVP
of the women's swimming and diving team. The winner of both the
Bates Athletic Department Senior Sportsmanship Award and the Wigton
Scholar-Athlete Award, Charlotte has also earned a place on the
NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team, the NESCAC All-Academic Team, and
the NESCAC All-Conference Team. An NCAA national championship
qualifier and a seven-time Bates record holder, she was once named
the National Swimmer of the Week by collegeswimming.com. In
addition, Charlotte has earned distinction as a Bates Athletic
Academic Honor Roll honoree and as an Academic All-American. Her
honors thesis is titled "Ultimate Weapons: The Persistence of
Knighthood in Medieval and Modern Literature." |

and field, Peter Gurney is a music major from Arlington, Va. A
NESCAC All-Academic selection, he also earned All-ECAC recognition

Scholar-Athlete and Academic Honor Roll honoree. His thesis is
titled "Music for Piano, Cello, Bassoon, and Clarinet." |

history major from Williamstown, Mass., Anna Hogeland is a
four-year starter letter-winner and as a senior became the captain
of the women's squash team. In addition to earning recognition as a
Bates Athletic Department Academic Honor Roll honoree, Anna has
been named a NESCAC All-Academic selection, a National All-Academic
Team member and a College Squash Association Scholar-Athlete. Her
thesis is titled "The History and Evolution of the Receptions and
Settlement Experiences of Immigrants to Lewiston, Maine, from 1850
to the Present." Anna will be attending the Smith College School
for Social Work this summer. |

four-year letter winner in lacrosse, Emily Howe is an English major
from Carlisle, Mass. A NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team member, Emily
also earned the Bates College Lacrosse Coach's Award and NESCAC

Academic Honor Roll and an IWLCA Academic Honor Roll honoree. She
has also been awarded the Phillips Student Fellowship. Her honors

is a mathematics and economics double-major from Yongin, South
Korea. Dae Ro earned recognition as a Bates Athletic Department

selection, and he once was named NESCAC Men's Soccer Player of the
Week. He presented his senior seminar in mathematics on "Chaotic

Dana Lindauer is a classical and medieval studies major from
Needham, Mass. A member of the NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team and

CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Track
and Field Team. She is a Bates record-holder in four different
events and a two-time NCAA Championship competitor. A Bates
Athletic Department Scholar-Athlete, she received the 2011 Milton
L. Lindholm Scholar-Athlete Award as the female varsity athlete
with the highest cumulative grade point average. Dana has also been
inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Her thesis is

letter-winner and captain of the lacrosse team. A Bates Athletic

selection, Cody received the 2011 Milton L. Lindholm
Scholar-Athlete Award as the male varsity athlete with the highest
cumulative grade point average. In addition, Cody has been named a
Dana Scholar and a Beckman Scholar, and has been inducted into Phi
Beta Kappa. His honors thesis is titled "Evaluating Ruthenium
Catalysts for the Hydrodeoxygenation of Fast Pyrolysis Oil." |

Patterson A four-year letter-winner and two-year
captain of the rowing team, Ellen Patterson is a pyschology major
from St. Louis Park, Minn. A NESCAC All-Academic selection, she
also earned recognition on the NIRC Stewards' All-Academic Team.
Ellen was awarded the Jon W. Brayshaw Award and has competed at the
NCAA Division III Women's Rowing Championship in each of her four
years at Bates, helping the team finish as the national runner-up
in each of the past three years. In addition to her athletic
accomplishments, she has also been recognized with a Helen A.
Papaioanou Community-Based Learning Grant. Her thesis is titled
"Food Issues Somali Immigrants Face in Lewiston, Maine." |

Ruppertsberger A biology major from Plainfield, N.H.,
Natalie Ruppertsberger is a four-year letter-winner and captain of
Nordic skiing. A Bates Athletic Department Academic Honor Roll
honoree, she has also been named to the NESCAC All-Academic Team
and to the Academic All-American Team. A three-time NCAA National
College Skiing Championship competitor Natalie earned All-East
recognition in 2010 and this year was named Bates' female athlete

baseball from Sunderland, Mass., Luke Wamboldt is an English major
with mathematics and economics minors. He earned distinction as a
Bates Athletic Department Academic Honor Roll honoree and as a
two-time NESCAC All-Academic Team member. In addition, he was
awarded the David R. Nash Memorial Baseball Award in 2011. His
thesis is titled "The Speculations of Margaret Atwood: Identity,
Gender, and the Posthuman." |

Emma E. White A double-major in
biological chemistry and Russian from Bainbridge Island, Wash.,
Emma White is a four-year member of the women's rowing team. She
has been recognized as a Bates Athletic Department Academic Honor
Roll honoree and as a two-time NESCAC All-Academic Team member.
Emma has competed at the NCAA Division III Women's Rowing
Championship in each of her four years at Bates, helping the
Bobcats finish as the national runner-up in each of the past three
years. Her theses are titled "Alpha Kinase Anchoring Protein (7)
Localizes to Neuronal Axons in the CA3 Region of the Mouse
Hippocampus," and "An Investigation of the Baikalisk Pulp and Paper
Mill, Lake Baikal, Russia." The Bates Scholar-Athlete Society was
created in 2005 to underscore the College's commitment to the
scholar-athlete ideal. The Society includes seniors nominated by
their coaches who have compiled a 3.5f grade point average or have
received a special nomination from faculty and staff for
distinguished academic achievement in their junior and senior
years. To be eligible for induction, student-athletes must
participate in a varsity sport for at least three years. |
