Candice Poiss Murray grew up in New Hyde
Park, N.Y., with her Austrian parents and four siblings speaking
German and English, and she graduated from the Waldorf School in
Garden City. Even before Bates, she competed at national levels in
kayaking, earning a spot on the Junior National Team, competing at
the Junior World Championships, and earning bronze medals at
international competitions in Belgrade and Ottawa while in high
school and at Bates. She earned her Bates B.S. degree in
mathematics with a concentration in music. In addition to
athletics, Candice participated in the College choir, orchestra,
solo piano, the Newman Council, and WRBC. As a superb athlete
involved in almost all levels of the program, from trainer to
captain to strength and conditioning All-American to Athletic
Advisory Council, Candice competed in varsity field hockey and
indoor and outdoor track and field. She was awarded the Senior
Athletic Citation Award, and since graduation has volunteered for
Bates as an Alumni in Admissions interviewer and college fair
representative, also serving as volunteer for the Bates Career
Development Center. At Bates, Candice was captain of the track team
and achieved All-Eastern and All-New England honors. She won the
ECAC events in the indoor weight throw and outdoor hammer, and held
Bates records for both events. She is still on the team's top 10
all-time performance list in the weight. Candice competed in
discus, javelin, and shot put, and she counted longtime head coach
Carolyn Court as a great mentor, role model and friend, as well as
a skilled and supportive coach. As a harbinger of her lifelong
career as a skilled and effective leader in women's athletics,
Candice was a highly successful and committed advocate for women's
sports while at Bates. As a student, she wrote and circulated at
track meets petitions to the NCAA to include women’s throwing
events at national competitions, a change that was approved for all
three NCAA divisions in 1994, two years after her graduation. After
Bates, Candice went on to George Washington University to earn a
degree in Health and Exercise Science. Candice lives in Saratoga
Springs, N.Y., and is currently the Commissioner of the North
Eastern Athletic Conference, a conference of New York,
Pennsylvania, Maryland, and District of Columbia colleges. Under
her leadership, the conference has grown enormously, from a small
conference to one with 13 full members, three associate members,
and a partnership with the North Atlantic Conference. The NEAC
sponsors 16 sports with 11 automatic qualifiers for NCAA
championships. Before her appointment in 2005, she was the Director
of Athletics and Recreation and head tennis coach at Russell Sage
College, and she also served as Director of Athletics and coached
field hockey and track at Trinity College in Washington, D.C. In
2007, she was awarded the NACWAA Conference Administrator of the
Year Award. How she manages the time is a mystery, but she also is
raising four children with her husband Jim, and she competes in ice
hockey, marathons, and triathlons. For her extraordinary career as
an athlete, and for her lifelong dedication, leadership and
commitment to athletics, we are proud to offer membership in the
Bates Scholar-Athlete Society to Candice Poiss Murray. |
